What to do if you lose your pet in Portage.

Our main goal for any lost pet is to get them home to their family quickly and safely. If for any unfortunate reason your pet gets lost in Portage please contact our office 219-763-1825. We will take some basic information (when did your pet go missing, where did they go missing from, description of your pet and contact information). You can also send us a photo through private messaging of your pet so we can put up a post on our page.

There are many ways you can ensure you’re contacted quickly, when your pet is found. Microchipping is a quick and effective way to get your pets home. Microchips can be inserted by your local veterinarian, animal shelter or by one of our animal control wardens. Our office can microchip your pet free of charge. Microchips work when they are scanned by a microchip scanner and the microchip company is contacted. The company will provide owner information to the agency so they can get the pet back home.

If your pet is not microchipped having a collar with identification tags also works. If the pet has a collar with tags the finder, or animal control, can contact the owner using the information listed. In the City of Portage you are required to have a domestic animal license for any pet that requires a rabies vaccination. These tags also help identify a pet if they are found.

If your pet has a collar, with no tags, another suggestion is to write your contact information on the collar with a permanent marker. Our office has collars in multiple sizes we can donate if you need a collar.

Lastly if your pet is a known escape artist there are GPS tracking options for pets. AirTags and other similar devices only work when near Bluetooth devices. There are other subscription service live trackers for pets such as Fi, Tractive and FitBark.

Our office strives to return pets directly back to their families and hopefully these suggestions can help create more successful reunions.
