Japan is using technology to bring back its forests.
Scientists have developed AI-powered drones that can plant seeds far quicker than humans. These drones don’t just drop seeds at random. They use LiDAR scanning to map the land, study the soil, and figure out the best spots for trees to grow.
The drones carry biodegradable seed pods filled with native seeds, nutrients, and fungi. Once dropped, many of these pods sprout and grow into healthy trees.
In test areas, germination rates have been reported at over 80%, compared to the 30–50% success rate with traditional planting. Even more impressive — these drones can plant forests up to ten times faster than humans working by hand.
This breakthrough could be a game changer in the fight against deforestation. With climate change and habitat loss threatening ecosystems around the world, Japan’s high-tech approach shows how innovation can help heal the planet.
The future of reforestation might just fly on drone wings. 🌍💚
