This year, our hearts (and our office!) were full as we collected and delivered holiday gifts for the Christmas Family Foundation and our adopted family. ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ„

This was a small way for our WWC community to show up with care, generosity, and connectionโ€”because everyone deserves to feel seen and supported during the holidays.

We're deeply grateful to our team and community partners who helped make this possible. Together, we're spreading warmth, dignity, and joyโ€”one family at a time. ๐Ÿ’›

Is EMDR covered by insurance?
For many Portland-area clients, this question is the deciding factor in starting trauma therapy.

The good news: EMDR is an evidence-based treatment and is typically covered by Oregon Health Plan (OHP) and most major commercial insurance plans. Yesโ€”this includes both in-person and online EMDR when clinically appropriate.

In our latest blog, we break down:
โœ” Why EMDR is covered
โœ” Which insurance plans we accept
โœ” How we verify benefits for you
โœ” What to expect when getting started

You don't have to navigate insurance or next steps aloneโ€”we'll walk you through it.

Today wasnโ€™t really about numbers โ€” but the people behind them. It reminded us how much we take the little things for granted.

The Willamette Wellness Center team had the privilege of volunteering at the Oregon Food Bankโ€™s Northeast Emergency Food Program, and what stayed with us most were the human moments.

Yes, together we helped serve 339 families, and we learned that over 60% of the households served were seniors. Many needed help just getting their groceries to their cars. Walking alongside them, unloading bags, listening to their stories โ€” those quiet conversations became the most meaningful part of the day.

Thanks to the generosity of our staff and clients during the WWC Food Drive, we were also able to donate 155 pounds of food directly to the program. But what truly stopped us in our tracks were the things we often take for granted.

๐Ÿฅš Eggs arrived, and there was genuine excitement. Protein โ€” something so basic โ€” felt like a gift.
๐Ÿ’ Fresh flowers were donated, and suddenly the room felt lighter. Watching people receive flowers, some for the first time in a long while, was a powerful reminder that dignity, beauty, and joy matter too.

Weโ€™re often surprised to realize that food insecurity exists even in places we donโ€™t expect โ€” but today made it real. Not through statistics, but through smiles, hugs, gratitude, and the shared humanity of simply showing up for one another.

Weโ€™re deeply grateful to the Oregon Food Bank, our volunteer coordinator Jon, and partners like Trader Joeโ€™s, whose generous food donations โ€” even specialty items, like brie cheese โ€” make a meaningful difference for local families.

WWC encourages everyone to consider volunteering or supporting the Oregon Food Bank in any way they can. Itโ€™s not just about giving food โ€” itโ€™s about connection, compassion, and community.

The holidays aren't "the most wonderful time of the year" for everyone โ€” and if family gatherings feel more stressful than joyful, you're not alone. ๐Ÿ’›

At Willamette Wellness Center, our therapists know how complicated holiday dynamics can be. From perfection pressure to repeating toxic patterns, family interactions can bring up old wounds fast.

That's why we put together a therapist-approved list of Holiday Survival Strategies to help you stay grounded, protect your energy, and choose your peace this season.

Here's a peek at what's inside:
โœจ Setting realistic expectations
โœจ Preparing coping tools before you need them
โœจ Delegating and embracing the "F-It Rule"
โœจ Changing traditions to fit your needs
โœจ Creating and practicing healthy boundaries
โœจ Bringing a "crisis buddy" + exit plan
โœจ Talking it out afterward with someone safe

You deserve a holiday that feels supportive โ€” not draining.
And rememberโ€ฆ therapists have dysfunctional families too (which is exactly how this list was born ๐Ÿคญ).

Meet WWC therapist Carmen Schwisow (she/her) โ€” a Portland-born clinician who has a special place in her heart for misfits, creatives, neurodivergent folks, and anyone who's ever felt "different." ๐Ÿ’›

Carmen's path to becoming a therapist wasn't linear (and that's exactly what makes her so good at what she does). She blends real-life experience, deep compassion, and a grounded approach to help adults in the greater Portland area find clarity, belonging, and a little more ease in their days.

At Willamette Wellness Center, we believe healing extends beyond therapy โ€” it begins with connection, compassion, and community.

This November and December, WWC is dedicating the season to giving back. Our team is pairing with the West Linn Food Bank: https://www.facebook.com/Westlinnfoodpantry/ by hosting a food bank drive at our office and dropping donated food at West Linn Food Bank.

As a mental health organization, we know that wellness starts with having your basic needs met โ€” including access to food, safety, and support. Feeding and caring for our community is part of how we live our mission: to make healing accessible to everyone. ๐Ÿ’š

Food banks are experiencing record need this year, and the following items make a big difference: ๐Ÿฅซ Canned chicken, tuna, and beans ๐Ÿš Pasta, rice, cereal, and peanut butter ๐ŸŽ Canned fruits and vegetables (low-sodium or packed in juice) ๐Ÿฒ Canned soups, stews, and chili ๐Ÿง‚ Cooking basics like vegetable oil, flour, sugar, salt, spices, and powdered milk

Many boxed foods call for added ingredients that families may not have, so cooking oil and powdered milk are especially appreciated. ๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Fred Meyer's Kroger Brand offers powdered milk (3 ร— 3.2 oz pouches for $3.99) and vegetable oil (32 fl oz for $2.99 pictured here) โ€” small, affordable ways to make a big impact.

As we reflect on all we're thankful for this season โ€” our clients, clinicians, and community โ€” we're proud to stand together in service. ๐Ÿ’› Because when one person heals, it ripples outward โ€” feeding hope, connection, and care for all. ๐ŸŒฟ

Invisible illness is real.
The grief is real.
The exhaustion is real.

And the emotional toll? Even heavier than most people know.

This article, by WWC therapist Rose Walker, breaks down what chronic illness feels like from the inside โ€” and why support matters so much. Check the comments for the link.

If you're navigating this too, drop a ๐Ÿ’š so others know they're not alone.
