Happy 4th of July!
Before the 4th of July weekend, while you are gathering with family and friends enjoying that scent of something grilling on the BBQ and coolness of a refreshing drink, I would like to remember, for just a few moments, if you would indulge me, about your family, friends, and neighbors that are living alone.
Perhaps this not the topic you want to acknowledge before having fun sailing, kayaking, or hiking, however, it is an important one.
Not to be a bummer, but loneliness can reduce your life expectancy by 50%! Yes, that is 5.0. Add heart disease, diabetes, or Alzheimer's and that number increases. Since we currently have more than 54mm older adults in the U.S., and over 6mm with Alzheimer's, it is a solid chance that you, yes you, know someone that is potentially living alone. Now, loneliness can occur at any age, it is just that I am a gerontologist focusing on older adulthood.
As many adults during the past few years, I also have experienced isolation and loneliness, and let me share, it is not a great experience. If we are aware of our loneliness, it really is a manifestation that we need to make a change, a change like, joining others for BBQs and tiki umbrella-d drinks. However, if you have Alzheimer's, you don't have the awareness of being able to make a change and only experience the pains of loneliness.
Loneliness decreases our productivity, clarity, functioning, health, wellbeing, and it increases a whole lot of negative emotions, feelings, and for some, actions. Loneliness can be the worst type of pain experienced.
So, perhaps before you head out to the family cabin or prepare your backyard for 4th festivities, maybe invite your neighbor, check in on friends or family. For America, taking our Independence from England oh so many years ago, gave us the freedom to explore, develop autonomy, and create communities.
The greatest gift you can give another is your time and love.
Love is an action and without it, why did we even seek our Independence.
