Streptomycin was the first effective antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis. The discovery of streptomycin is credited to Dr. Selman Waksman and a team at Rutgers University sometime around 1943. The impact of streptomycin on TB disease was felt significantly as it's use became standard and deaths from TB quickly declined. While Streptomycin is now a second-line drug for TB treatment, Rutgers University is still a leader in the global effort to cure and end TB through their Global Tuberculosis Institute.

The TB Program would like to recognize and thank our amazing partners in Oregon at all our local public health departments, non-profits, and community organizations across the state for all the incredible work you do daily to ensure the health of Oregonians! 🌟 We truly appreciate all the nurses, community health workers, health educators, program managers, epidemiologists, and administrators statewide who, day after day, show up and make a difference! Our state is healthier because of you, and our program would be less accessible and harder pressed to work towards our vision of a state, nation, and world without TB if we didn’t have your fantastic partnership. You work tirelessly to provide disease and health education, treatment, and care to everyone, often doing so without much recognition for your efforts and selflessness. Let’s keep building these partnerships in health, equity, and care together! You are all so valuable to this work!

World TB Day is coming! Each year on March 24 we recognized World TB Day. This significant day marks the groundbreaking announcement by Dr. Robert Koch in 1882 of the discovery of the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis. This was a pivotal moment in the medical field and led to the development of diagnostic tools and treatments for TB. At the OHA TB Program we strive to raise awareness and increase public understanding about TB and the ongoing epidemic we face. We work to promote preventive measures, early diagnosis and effective treatment for all in our great state.
We are excited to share more through the coming week. Keep updated with us by liking and sharing this post and others from us as we focus on bringing an end to TB in Oregon and worldwide.

World TB Day is coming soon! The Stop TB partnership has resources and a toolkit available now.

The World TB Day 2026 Campaign Toolkit is now available!

The Stop TB Partnership is proud to launch this year’s campaign theme:

“Yes! We Can End TB. Led by […]. Powered by […].”

Building on the global rallying cry of the past three years, the 2026 theme highlights what truly drives progress: country leadership and the power of people.

Countries are not just participants in the fight against TB — they are leading it. And progress is powered every day by communities, TB survivors, health workers, advocates, innovators, and partners who refuse to accept TB as inevitable.

The toolkit provides adaptable, multilingual resources to help countries and partners engage around World TB Day, including:
- Editable slogan “Yes! We Can End TB. Led by […]. Powered by […].”, so that you can create your custom World TB Day slogan
- A set of pre-prepared slogans examples
- Social media frame
- Conference call background

This flexible, modular theme invites you to define leadership and action in your own context — reinforcing ownership, accountability, and people-centred progress toward ending TB by 2030.

Community Health Update: TB Awareness

TB (tuberculosis) cases are increasing in Oregon. In 2025, the state reported its highest number of TB cases in nearly 20 years.

✅ Good news: There were no TB cases in Lincoln County in 2025.

Even so, it’s important to know the signs:

• Cough lasting 2–3 weeks
• Fever or night sweats
• Unexplained weight loss
• Feeling very tired

If you have symptoms or concerns, get checked early. Testing and treatment help keep our community healthy.
