Darrin Landry, Clinical Diagnostics and Relationship Manager at EMG, made the trip to Dartmouth to lecture to residents, attendings and photographers on optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCT-A). Darrin was happy to share how EMG was at the forefront of the use of this technology, and to offer helpful tips on how Dartmouth can better implement OCT-A in their clinic.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Every year, the Chicago River and other waterways around the country are dyed green to celebrate the day. The basic chemical used to achieve this effect is fluorescein- which is used daily to perform some diagnostic testing at EMG. Procedures like fluorescein angiography and corneal staining uses the same basic ingredient (prepared for medical use, of course).

One of the risk factors for developing macular degeneration (AMD) is smoking.
Chemicals in cigarette smoke trigger oxidative stress, constrict blood vessels in the retina, and cause damaging inflammation in the retina. Smoking not only increases the risk of developing AMD but can accelerate the progression of the disease.
In addition, smokers with the wet form of AMD may not respond as well to eye injection treatments.
If you have other risk factors, such as:
• Age (over 50)
• Family history of AMD
• High blood pressure
• Overweight
Speak to your primary care physician about quitting smoking- the sooner you do, the quicker your risk level can lowered.

Macular degeneration can affect your vision, and treatment may be available. People should be monitored for macular degeneration (AMD) primarily starting at age 50, with more frequent check-ups for those with risk factors like smoking, family history, or elevated blood pressure. Comprehensive dilated eye exams are recommended every 1–2 years for adults over 50, and annually for those over 60, to catch early, symptom-free stages.
