The philosophical approach of integrated health is to promote individual and community health and wellness by integrating behavioral health and primary care. Integrated health can be provided in many different locations and agencies.
Behavioral health focuses on behaviors that affect overall health and well-being. Behavioral health may include mental health diagnoses, substance use/abuse, and other health related behaviors (e.g. diet, exercise, medication adherence, smoking). Factors that influence behavioral health are organic, external, and individual. The integration of behavioral health and primary care attempts to address the complex interactions on these factors to promote health and well-being.
The Behavioral Health Integration Project (BHIP) is a 4-year project that will prepare MSW students to practice in integrated behavioral and primary care settings working with rural and/or medically underserved populations across the lifespan. Participating MSW students will receive a $10,000 stipend during their advanced practice year. Medically underserved populations include those with social, economic, cultural, and/or linguistic barriers to accessing health care including but not limited to: people of color, LGBTQ2+S, low-income, homeless, and immigrant/refugee populations.
Types of Field Placement Settings
Field placements will provide students with learning experiences in integrated behavioral and primary care settings. Potential agency settings have the capacity to provide integrated primary and behavioral health screening, assessment, and brief intervention or treatment. Settings may include but are not limited to primary care clinics, community behavioral health centers, hospitals, hospice programs, and school based health clinics.
Overview of Required Student Learning Experience
Agencies interested in participating in BHIP will need to provide students with the following learning opportunities at least once:
Direct practice with individuals and/or families in the integration of behavioral health into primary health care
Interdisciplinary team-based work with 2 or more non-social work disciplines at least one must be a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.
Conduct, under supervision, integrated bio-psycho-social assessment that addresses the integration of behavioral and primary health (e.g. mental health, substance abuse, trauma, and/or physical health).
Practice providing brief solution-focused interventions and identifying individuals who may need to be referred to specialized services.
Field Instructor Opportunities
A significant emphasis in this grant is to develop field placement sites. Field Instructors will receive the following:
Access to professional development mini-grant funds
Mentorship/Support from BHIP program staff
Access to 3 online trainings in addition to the trainings already provided by the PSU Field team
BHIP field instructors will be invited to participate in our Fall Symposium in September,
BHIP field instructors will be asked to complete an additional evaluation tool for their students and provide feedback to the project leaders for the purposes of the project evaluation.
