New from PIPS, our Portland Institute for Psychedelic Science πŸ§ πŸ„

A recent study co-authored by Dr. Jason Luoma and Dr. Brian Pilecki surveyed over 850 mental health professionals, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists, to understand attitudes toward psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT).

Key findings:

πŸ§‘β€βš•οΈ Psychologists were the most supportive, viewing PAT as reasonable and acceptable.

πŸ’Š Psychiatrists reported high confidence in their understanding of PAT, but were more cautious about its feasibility.

🀝 Social workers were more skeptical, expressing greater concerns and less belief in PAT's potential, highlighting a need for targeted education and training.

Why this matters: As PAT moves forward mainstream acceptance, understanding these disciplinary differences is crucial. If we want PAT to be accessible, safe, and effectively delivered, we need interdisciplinary collaboration, not silos. This research helps identify where education and training are most needed.

Bicycle Day: Honoring the ride that started it all. 🚲✨

On April 19, 1943, Dr. Albert Hofmann deliberately ingested L*D for the first time and biked home, unknowingly launching the modern era of psychedelic science.

That historic ride led to decades of research showing that psychedelics, when combined with psychotherapy, could help people struggling with anxiety, depression, and addiction. It established the foundational principles of set, setting, preparation, and integration that still guide our work today.

At PIPS, we're proud to carry that legacy forward, through rigorous research with psilocybin and M**A, through our psilocybin-assisted therapy program, and through our commitment to evidence-based, ethical care.

Here's to the past, present, and future of psychedelic science. 🌿

World Voice Day celebrates the human voice, the ability to sing, speak, express, and be heard. πŸŽ™οΈπŸ—£οΈ

But for many who come to Portland Psychotherapy, the relationship with voice is more complicated.

Some have spent years silencing themselves. Some carry trauma that lives in the body because words were never safe. Some are learning, for the first time, to name an identity held in secret. Some are navigating relationships where their voice has been dismissed.

Therapy, at its best, is where voice can be reclaimed.

Our research on shame and self criticism, led by Dr. Jason Luoma, has taught us that so much suffering happens in silence. Shame tells us to hide, to contract, to make ourselves small. The antidote is not positive thinking. It is being witnessed. It is speaking the unspeakable and finding you are still held in regard.

Finding your voice might mean putting words to trauma for the first time. It might mean speaking up in a relationship after years of accommodation. It might mean quieting an inner critic that has had the microphone too long. It might mean saying out loud who you are and trusting you still belong.

Your voice matters. Not because it is perfect, but because it is yours. We are here to listen it into fuller expression.

New research from PIPS πŸ“„πŸ„

What happens when psilocybin is combined with group support, community, and a focus on psychological flexibility? A new pilot study from Portland Institute for Psychedelic Science, led by Dr. Jason Luoma, Dr. Brian Pilecki, and Dr. Kati Lear, offers promising answers.

The study took place at a psilocybin retreat in Jamaica, where nine participants engaged in three sessions over seven days. Researchers measured psychological flexibility, the ability to stay present, adapt, and act in alignment with values, before the retreat, two weeks after, and six months later.

Key findings

✨ Participants showed large improvements in cognitive defusion, the ability to distance from unhelpful thoughts, and valued living, acting in alignment with what matters most

✨ These changes were sustained at both the two week and six month follow up points

✨ Participants also reported increases in self compassion and social safeness, suggesting benefits that extend beyond symptom reduction

This research highlights the potential of psilocybin to enhance psychological flexibility, a core process in mental health. It also points to the value of integrating approaches like ACT into psychedelic assisted therapy.

World Health Day reminds us of a truth that bears repeating: there is no health without mental health. 🧠❀️

The two cannot be separated. Chronic stress shapes the body. Trauma lives in the nervous system. Mental health is foundational to what it means to be healthy.

But true health also requires equity. Quality care should not be a privilege reserved for some, but a resource available to all.

At Portland Psychotherapy, this belief guides how we practice. We are OHA certified as a Culturally and Linguistically Specific Services provider for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. Your identity should never be something you have to explain to heal. We are in network with OHP, CareOregon, Trillium, and PacificSource. Financial barriers should not determine who gets care. We specialize in evidence based approaches like ACT and CBT. People deserve care that actually works.

Health equity also means addressing the systemic realities that create disparities. Discrimination, minority stress, and lack of access all leave marks. We work to provide care that accounts for them.

On World Health Day, we reaffirm our commitment to mental health as health. And we recommit to making that health accessible, affirming, and rooted in science for everyone.

In psychedelic experiences, mindset may matter more than the molecule. 🧠✨

Excited to share one of our latest papers: "Mindset over Molecule."
πŸ”— https://rdcu.be/e4VaF

We set out to examine whether pharmacologically distinct substances (M**A, psilocybin, cannabis) produce distinct experiential blueprints of self-transcendent experiences.

While we did find some differences by substance, a less expected pattern emerged: mindset (a person's mental state going into the experience) accounted for 3–15Γ— more variance in outcomes than substance type.

In other words, psychological context,"set," appeared to matter more than the specific molecule alone.

Our findings need replication, especially with longitudinal designs, but they point to an intriguing possibility: that who we are and how we show up may shape the experience as much as what we take.

Grateful to our incredible team, Angelica Spata, Will Lucas, and Jason Luoma, who made this work possible. Excited to see where future research takes us.

Harmonize Your Health Day invites us to consider what it means to feel whole. Not perfectly balanced, but able to move with life's rhythms, holding joy and sorrow, struggle and growth, as part of one unfolding story. 🎨✨

At PIPS, we think about this often. It's at the heart of what we call integration.

For those who participate in psychedelic experiences, the journey doesn't end when the medicine wears off. The real work begins afterward: weaving insights, emotions, and new perspectives into everyday life. Integration means making meaning out of experiences that can feel beyond words. It means holding space for both the luminous and the difficult. It means letting new awareness inform how you show up in relationships, work, and your inner world. It means living with greater alignment between your values and actions.

This kind of harmonization isn't unique to psychedelic experiences. It's something many of us seek, whether that's through therapy, meditation, time in nature, or simply the slow work of growing wiser. It's the practice of becoming more fully ourselves.

At PIPS, we're committed to researching how these processes work and how they can be supported. Because harmonizing your health is not a destination. It's an ongoing practice.
