Preventative care took a huge hit in 2020 due to the pandemic. Thousands of children skipped routine check ups last year, the effects of which we are only beginning to see. Your pediatrician checks many key aspects of health during well check ups, so it's important to get back on track. Most offices have precautions in place, which make visits to your pediatrician as safe as it can be.

Recently moved or don't have a pediatrician for your child yet? Give us a call, we'd love to welcome you to the Northern Peds family!

The most common type of torticollis is the congenital form (meaning your baby was born with it).

πŸ”Έ It usually begins around 2-6 weeks of age, when you start noticing 🧐 that your baby has a tendency to "prefer" looking either ⬅️ or ➑️. Then you start to notice that they protest 😫, or refuse to turn their head to the other side.

πŸ”Έ There are many causes of torticollis, but most of the time when it's isolated (meaning there are no other associated problems with the torticollis), it responds well to home exercises and/or physical therapy.

πŸ”Έ You should always bring concerns of torticollis up to your doctor. What may look like "simple" torticollis could be a manifestation of something more serious.

⚠️ Potential warning signs to something more serious include head size/shape abnormalities, fever, inappropriate vomiting (vs normal baby spit up), developmental delays, asymmetry of the face, signs of infection.

☝️ If you think it's a concern, don't hesitate to mention it to your pediatric provider!

Today, we're talking about a less common, though important cause of head shape deformities: πšŒπš›πšŠπš—πš’πš˜πšœπš’πš—πš˜πšœπšπš˜πšœπš’πšœ. This is where the skull bones fuse before they are supposed to (that is, before the 🧠 has finished growing). More than just a cosmetic defect, craniosynostosis can have significant medical (even life-threatening) consequences.

πŸ‘ΆπŸ» When your baby is first born, their skull is not yet a solid slab of bone. Rather, the skull is made up of multiple segments, much like a loosely held together puzzle 🧩. This allows for the skull to grow as your child's brain gets bigger. As the brain reaches adult size, the "puzzle pieces" of the skull fuse and form a tight cohesive skull πŸ’€.

πŸ”† Because the early skull has flexible and moldable parts, a baby's skull can become deformed due to various factors.

πŸ”† The most common reason your baby has a "funny shaped head" is due to reversible things such as πŸ”˜ molding during birth πŸ”˜ too much time in the car seat πŸ”˜ preferentially sleeping on one side of the head πŸ”˜ or muscle disorders like torticollis (more on that in our next posts).

πŸ”† For a parent and pediatrician, the biggest clue 🧐 to a potential craniosynostosis is an abnormality in head growth (whether size or shape). This is checked AT LEAST at every well check up.

πŸ”† If you're ever unsure, just mention it to your pediatric provider.
