Hello! ☺️ My name is MJ, and I am The 9 Toed Mermaid. This is the origin of my page and small business's quirky name:
The 9 Toed Mermaid was created in 2017 while I was recovering from the most traumatic experience of my life. My beautiful mini doxie, fur child Bean, and I were in a horrific car accident due to a wild winter storm when we were living in South Dakota. I chose to save him without hesitation, and my legs were crushed by my car's transmission.
I spent 2017 in a wheelchair, with the knowledge from my surgeons that it would take possibly 10 years to walk again. Ian, my soulmate, was my long-distance boyfriend at the time. He made the executive decision to bring Bean and me to the Pacific Northwest to heal and have a safe environment to live. Also, I didn't receive any kind of medical disability while living in South Dakota, and the PNW offered at least free X-rays and physicals.
Once settled into my new location, I chose to teach myself how to crochet. During my learning process, I came up with the concept of taking different types of materials and incorporating them with crocheting to create something I am now confident to share publicly. It's truly amazing to me that in one of the darkest times of my life, I was still shining bright by being creative.
Today, I have been walking and living my best PNW life for 7 years. In that time, I've worked out a lot of my ideas while managing Ian's metal band.
