We understand that many of you have been closely following the “Momnibus” bill and are thrilled to hear that commercial insurance will begin covering Doula Care starting in 2026. While we share your excitement about this development, we must acknowledge that there are still several uncertainties.
What We Need from You
We kindly ask our community to reach out to your insurance companies to gather information regarding your Doula coverage. It’s important to note that commercial insurers may utilize different coding than what is currently being used for Medicaid and OEBB/PEBB families, which could complicate reimbursements.
Billing commercial insurance directly can be challenging for Doulas. Many may opt for an upfront payment model, providing you with a SUPER BILL to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Please remember, your doula must currently be a state-certified THWs to be eligible for reimbursement. If they issue a super bill using the same codes as Medicaid, you may not receive proper reimbursement.
By reaching out to your insurance companies for clarity on accepted codes, you not only encourage insurers to take action but also assist Doulas within the community in ensuring families receive the reimbursements they deserve.
If you obtain any pertinent information, we would greatly appreciate it if you could share it with us. We are more than willing to disseminate this information within the Doula community. While we do not claim to be experts in insurance billing, we are committed to working alongside you to help our community secure the coverage it rightfully deserves.
