One of the unexpected benefits of practicing prenatal yoga at the studio over the last few months (for those of you who don’t know, I’m pregnant!) has been how it’s clarified and affirmed the ways in which yoga offers support for moving through challenging experiences. Like pregnancy and birth, yes, but also… life - personal struggles, global strife, terrifying political moments like the one we are currently living through.
In this way, yoga is unlike many other mainstream movement practices.
Don’t get me wrong - I am a huge advocate for a well rounded physical practice and I believe that other modalities offer things yoga can’t - weight lifting supports bone and muscle strength in ways yoga doesn’t, a walk outside offers connection to nature in a way that studio yoga can’t quite grasp. So integrating these elements into your movement routine alongside yoga is hugely important.
And yet, skillfully guided, trauma-informed yoga offers unique support that other physical modalities don’t.
In prenatal yoga, we prepare our joints for birth, yes, and tend the many points of discomfort from pregnancy.
But the true magic of this practice comes from so much more - it’s in the tending to one’s whole being; practicing for the psycho-emotional ups and downs that come with pregnancy, birth, and parenthood (for those who plan to parent). How?
🤎 We practice mindfulness, which supports presence so we can be more fully with the range of intensity life brings.
In class, this looks like everything from building the capacity to be with the subtleties of a still or slow moving practice to the intensity of an active challenging practice. In ’s Prenatal Yoga class, for example, we hold a squat for a minute and are supported through their guidance to be with it all in curiosity and receptivity - not gripping; not pushing away.
These are tools that we can take with us into the challenging moments of our lives outside of class.
