We celebrate Earth Day on April 22 each year, but why not celebrate it with sustainability all year long? We had Float Harder consider Waste and sustainability in all of our operations. Float tanks are considered environmentally sustainable primarily because they are engineered to conserve water and energy through highly efficient, closed-loop filtration systems and low-impact operation. These systems allow the same, small volume of water to be reused for months while maintaining extreme sanitation standards. The combination of low water volume, constant, highly efficient sanitation, and high-density, reusable saline solution makes floatation tanks a sustainable wellness option. Keep in mind, from our soaps and lotions to our cleaning products we keep things natural, biodegradable, and cruelty free.

On April 17th, Float Harder celebrates ten years of floating with our community.

When we opened our doors in 2016, Float Harder was run almost entirely by Amy and I operating 18 hours a day, seven days a week, doing everything from greeting guests and cleaning tanks to navigating ordinances and taxes. What started as a small family operation built around a belief in the power of floating has slowly grown into something substantially bigger. Today, we share floating with thousands of people each year thanks to our small and incredible team. Many of our staff members have been with us for a large portion of this past decade, and they help create the thoughtful, welcoming experience that so many of you have come to know. While the number of faces at the front desk may have grown, the heart of the business has stayed the same: introducing people to floating for the first time and maintaining a space where people can slow down, reset, explore, and take care of themselves.

When Float Harder opened in 2016, a single float was $65. Ten years later, our regular float price is $75. That is an increase of just $10, or about 15 percent over an entire decade, something we’re incredibly proud of being able to sustain for our community.
Running a small, independent business through a decade like this has not always been simple, but it has been incredibly meaningful. Every float booked, every membership maintained, every friend you’ve brought in to try floating for the first time has helped keep this little dream going.

We are so grateful. Grateful for the community that has supported us, for the staff who have helped shape Float Harder into what it is today, and for each of you who has floated with us over the years. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Here’s to 10 more wonderful years.

The Epsom salt solution and the air in the float tanks are warmed to skin temperature (about 94°). It won’t feel hot like a hot tub, but you shouldn’t be cold. For most people, it should be a neutral, comfortable temperature. Often, the temperature is so close to that of the body, you lose track of where one starts and ends- a highly sought after sensation!

Being careful not to take too hot a shower before floating will be important. A hot shower can cause the float solution to feel cool in comparison. A cooler pre-float shower will ensure that the float solution feels warm when entering the float tank.

If you become cold during your float, finding stillness and taking a few deep breaths can help to regulate your body temperature. You may be tempted to move around or splash the warm water over the exposed parts of the body, however this is counterintuitive as then the exposed body is wet, making you feel colder.

We still have Lion’s Mane tinctures from North Spore left. Members get 10% off. What is it good for? Lion’s mane is a medicinal mushroom celebrated for boosting cognitive function, improving memory, reducing mild anxiety/depression, and supporting nerve regeneration. Rich in antioxidants, it strengthens immunity, reduces inflammation, and promotes gut health. Research also suggests potential benefits for heart health and cardiovascular function. Add it to a drink or just drop some on your tongue.

Floating helps cultivate “the art of letting go” for those who have grinding circular negative thoughts. It can aid with the conscious, intentional practice of releasing attachments to past events, negative emotions, specific outcomes, or toxic relationships that no longer serve personal growth. It is not about giving up or erasing memories, but rather adapting to change, accepting reality, and cultivating inner peace within the Float Tank and hopefully with practice outside the tank.

On April 17, 2026, we will be celebrating 10 years of providing, safe, and accessible floatation therapy, growing from a two-person operation into a beloved community wellness hub. Founded by Amy and James Harder in 2016, the center has maintained a nearly flat pricing model, raising single floats from $65 to only $75 over the decade despite rising operating costs. When we opened our doors, Float Harder was run almost entirely by Amy and James operating 18 hours a day, seven days a week, doing everything from greeting guests and cleaning tanks to navigating ordinances and taxes. What started as a small family operation built around a belief in the power of floating has slowly grown into something substantially bigger. While the number of faces at the front desk may have grown, the heart of the business has stayed the same: introducing people to floating for the first time and maintaining a space where people can slow down, reset, explore, and take care of themselves. The team looks forward to providing another 10 years of relaxing, transformative, and thoughtful experiences for the Portland community.

April is Stress Awareness Month, a time since 1992 dedicated to increasing public awareness about the causes, consequences, and management of stress. Chronic stress causes physical, mental, and emotional strain, including headaches, anxiety, and heart disease. Key management techniques include exercising, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, and setting boundaries.

Floating reduces stress by immersing you in skin-temperature water packed with Epsom salt, creating a weightless, distraction-free environment that lowers cortisol and triggers the parasympathetic nervous system. It provides profound mental relaxation, relieves physical tension, reduces blood pressure, and boosts endorphins. Keep in mind the 3-3-3 rule. It is a sensory-based grounding technique to reduce acute anxiety and stress by focusing on your surroundings. When overwhelmed, identify three things you see, three sounds you hear, and move three body parts. It breaks anxiety spirals by shifting focus from internal worry to the present moment.

We would find ourselves in social media jail if we showed people floating in the n**e in our advertisements and social media posts. Though you may see floaters wearing suits, we recommend floating in the buff. It really enhances the feeling of nothingness in the tank when you’re not worried about straps and wedgies. Keep in mind you have your own private room with your own private shower next to it. You also have a lock on your door for peace of mind. If you are more comfortable wearing a bathing suit, no problem. Make sure your suit is washed and free of dyes, sand, and debris. You may want to bring something to store that wet bathing suit in after your float for the trip home.
