On April 17, 2026, we will be celebrating 10 years of providing, safe, and accessible floatation therapy, growing from a two-person operation into a beloved community wellness hub. Founded by Amy and James Harder in 2016, the center has maintained a nearly flat pricing model, raising single floats from $65 to only $75 over the decade despite rising operating costs. When we opened our doors, Float Harder was run almost entirely by Amy and James operating 18 hours a day, seven days a week, doing everything from greeting guests and cleaning tanks to navigating ordinances and taxes. What started as a small family operation built around a belief in the power of floating has slowly grown into something substantially bigger. Today we share floating with thousands of people each year thanks to our small and incredible team. Many of our staff members have been with us for a large portion of this past decade and they help create the thoughtful, welcoming experience. that so many of you have come to know. While the number of faces at the front desk may have grown, the heart of the business has stayed the same: introducing people to floating for the first time and maintaining a space where people can slow down, reset, explore, and take care of themselves. The team looks forward to providing another 10 years of relaxing, transformative, and thoughtful experiences for the Portland community.

April is Stress Awareness Month, a time since 1992 dedicated to increasing public awareness about the causes, consequences, and management of stress. Chronic stress causes physical, mental, and emotional strain, including headaches, anxiety, and heart disease. Key management techniques include exercising, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, and setting boundaries.

Floating reduces stress by immersing you in skin-temperature water packed with Epsom salt, creating a weightless, distraction-free environment that lowers cortisol and triggers the parasympathetic nervous system. It provides profound mental relaxation, relieves physical tension, reduces blood pressure, and boosts endorphins. Keep in mind the 3-3-3 rule. It is a sensory-based grounding technique to reduce acute anxiety and stress by focusing on your surroundings. When overwhelmed, identify three things you see, three sounds you hear, and move three body parts. It breaks anxiety spirals by shifting focus from internal worry to the present moment.

We would find ourselves in social media jail if we showed people floating in the n**e in our advertisements and social media posts. Though you may see floaters wearing suits, we recommend floating in the buff. It really enhances the feeling of nothingness in the tank when you’re not worried about straps and wedgies. Keep in mind you have your own private room with your own private shower next to it. You also have a lock on your door for peace of mind. If you are more comfortable wearing a bathing suit, no problem. Make sure your suit is washed and free of dyes, sand, and debris. You may want to bring something to store that wet bathing suit in after your float for the trip home.

Though Float Tanks can offer profound healing we recommend waiting a period of time before floating if you have stitches or have had a recent surgery. A doctor might tell you a shower is acceptable after 48 hours but any type of soaking can be a risk for infection whether that be a bath, hot tub, pool or a float tank. You should avoid using a float tank until surgical stitches are fully healed and cleared by a doctor.

Did you know you could share your Float credits with others? Purchases of most float sessions and packages can be transferred to other users and most service credits expire after one year. All sessions take place during a two hour appointment block, which gives you time to shower before and after, allowing 80 minutes of tank time! If you have a Float credit you want to turn into a gift card give us a call or stop by the shop. We can send that gift card by email or post.

It’s spring cleaning time. For us a Float Harder it is always cleaning time. We have a staff who pride themselves in being clean freaks. It’s required for the job. Our tank the water is filtered between each float session. The water cycles through a one micron carbon filter which purifies it to the same quality as drinking water. It is infused with ozone and treated with UV Light as well as Hydrogen Peroxide. This three step filtration process is repeated three times between each float. Our staff is carefully trained to sanitize the shower, float tank and other high touch areas with an EPA certified disinfectant before the next float begins. Linens and float accoutrements are fully refreshed for each guest.

Floating is very beneficial to the skin and has been known to soothe skin conditions. Those with skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis are welcome to float but should proceed with caution. While research has shown that Epsom salt can be beneficial for these conditions, it may also exacerbate symptoms in some individuals if they’re dealing with a flareup.

The magnesium in the water of the float tank helps the overall appearance of our skin by lowering cortisol levels, stabilising our hormonal balance and improving cellular processes. It is naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial and can help detoxify our body and clear up skin irritations. Those with skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis are welcome to float but should proceed with caution. While research has shown that Epsom salt can be beneficial for these conditions, it may also exacerbate symptoms in some individuals if they are having a flare up.
