Portland Speech Clinic

Portland Speech Clinic Portland Speech Clinic is a private speech-language pathology practice in Portland, OR. So, how do I create the trust and affinity with your child?

I believe therapy should be individualized, fun, and understood by the family. By building trust and familiarity with you and your child, we can work together to create a therapy plan that allows us to see progress and growth in amazing and unexpected ways. By setting clear expectations, celebrating small victories, and using your child’s interests to engage them. We will sing, play, and do therapy all at the same time. I want you to understand your child’s differences so that you are empowered and can advocate for them. I want your child to have confidence and to have the skills to lead happy, successful lives. Let’s work together to set goals, give your child a voice, and support them in their success.

We did some more experiments at home! This one is called “Magic Milk,” and all you need is whole milk, dish soap, and food coloring.

We poured the milk into a shallow dish, added drops of food coloring, and then touched the surface with Q-tips dipped in dish soap to see the colors swirl! C. did almost all of it herself, after I pulled out the ingredients and stood by to guide her. 😉 Adding the googly eyes at the end was her idea.

A rainy morning felt like the perfect opportunity to do a science experiment. Since we’re still recovering from a cold, we kept it simple with the classic baking soda and vinegar experiment.

First, we poured baking soda into two bowls. Then we measured out vinegar into smaller cups and added food coloring to each one, building fine motor control and sequencing skills along the way. Finally, she poured each colorful cup of vinegar into the bowls and watched the reactions bubble and fizz to life.

Activities like this strengthen observation, motor planning, and cause-and-effect understanding, all through hands-on, fun exploration.🧪👩‍🔬

Here’s what I’m packing for our camping trip, besides the basics, to keep my 3-year-old curious and engaged:
1. A bug catcher and magnifier (perfect for catch and release!), plus a magnifying glass, binoculars, and a flower/leaf press
2. Two big books on birding and foraging
3. Headlamps for everyone + a manual compass
4 & 5. A couple of fun, nature-themed storybooks
6. C’s two current favorite books

Thinking about a round two with a scavenger hunt, a little basket for treasures, and some simple art supplies.

This may look like just a cool Wedgit tower, but it’s actually the result of a client achieving *100* accurate productions of our target sounds today! We’re using the complexity approach with a client who has significant unintelligibility. Our focus is on the 'skw' blend, with words 'squish' and 'squad.' We began working on 'squad' last month by breaking it down into smaller parts—'sod,' 'wad,' 'quad,' and finally 'squad.' Once he accurately produced the full word, we stopped using the individual parts and practiced 'squad' on its own. Last week, we introduced the word 'squish.'

Since this client has difficulty forming the necessary mouth shapes and movements, we chose words with an 'skw' blend followed by vowels that require minimal lip and jaw shifts. Yesterday, as we worked toward 100 productions, I started by modeling the sounds with visual cues, gradually reducing my help as he improved. By the end of the session, he was producing the sounds with minimal prompts. We tracked progress using a popper fidget with 100 bubbles, making it a fun and motivating session!
