Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU)

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Oregon Health & Science University is where healing, teaching and discovery come together. To make a OHSU is Oregon’s only public academic health center.

We are a system of hospitals and clinics across Oregon and Southwest Washington. We are an institution of higher learning with schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and public health. We are a national research hub with thousands of scientists working hard to develop new disease treatments and therapies. We are also one of Portland’s largest employers. As a public health organization, we provide services to the most vulnerable Oregonians and strive to improve health in communities across the state through our outreach efforts. OHSU encourages interaction, discussion, commentary, questions and even criticism but ask that you keep your comments and posts relevant and respectful. New research at OSHU offers a promising way to treat triple-negative breast cancer, which is a form of cancer that is notoriously aggressive and lacks effective treatments.

Researchers describe the effect of a molecule (SU212) in restricting an enzyme critical to cancer progression.

“There is definitely great science going on here, and we want to translate that science for the benefit of people.” - Dr. Sanjay Malhotra

Could someday also be useful in treating other cancers influenced by same enzyme, such as glioma, pancreatic cancer, thyroid carcinoma.

It’s respiratory virus season, and OHSU is reinforcing the use of seasonal masking to protect our patients, visitors and staff.

Masking is required in areas where patients and staff are at greatest risk, as well as for all patients, visitors and staff in the Emergency Department.

Masking is strongly encouraged in shared spaces. If you have symptoms, please mask and test:

OHSU offers COVID-19 vaccines, tests and treatments, including outpatient remdesivir. Our Long COVID team cares for adults and children.

“This is a huge step forward for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease."

An Arkansas woman emerged with vastly improved symptoms of the Parkinson’s disease that had plagued her for the past seven years. The procedure involved a type of brain surgery with no incisions at all.

The intervention used high-frequency focused ultrasound, or HIFU, and it marked the first time in the United States that the procedure had been used outside of a clinical trial for the primary treatment of Parkinson’s.

Focused ultrasound treatment for essential tremor now FDA-approved as a primary treatment for Parkinson’s; benefits OHSU patients in Oregon, across the country.

“Over the next three years, we’re going to change the way rural people who use drugs access health care."

The new initiative will rely on peer counselors to reach out to vulnerable people, especially those experiencing homelessness, and connect them directly with health care professionals through a mobile tablet or smartphone.

After a successful trial, expanded project will address HIV, hepatitis C, substance use, mental health in 20 counties across Oregon.

“This award will provide support to reach all individuals in the region who are interested in clinical trials, for new scientific investigators entering the field, and to better understand the cause of early cognitive decline and measures to promote continued cognitive health.”

A center dedicated to improving research and care for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias at Oregon Health & Science University has earned $22.8 million in continued federal funding over the next five years.

Federal award supports only Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Oregon, funded to study dementia, other late life cognitive disorders.

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University and partnering institutions received a three-year, $4.25 million federal award as part of a $50 million Autism Data Science Initiative launched by the NIH in September.

“We’re looking to find out what supports and what services do they need? What programs work and what don’t? Autistic people, their parents and their caregivers have the right to know what works for them.”

Researchers at OHSU, collaborating institutions embark on three-year NIH-funded study focusing on health outcomes.

Science + community = change. ✨ With a new $4.25M federal award from National Institutes of Health (NIH), Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and partners are joining forces with the autism community to reimagine what health can look like — combining science with lived experience to create meaningful change for people with autism. 💙

“Autistic people are valued members of our community here in Oregon and around the country, and OHSU researchers have been at the forefront of investigating important scientific questions that matter to these families,” said OHSU President Dr. Shereef Elnahal.

Autism now affects about 1 in 31 children in the U.S. (via CDC). Led by Dr. Katharine Zuckerman, professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine, OHSU is launching an initiative to improve quality of life through better preventative care, sleep, nutrition, and community support programs. A milestone in a promising technique to address infertility.

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have accomplished a unique proof of concept to treat infertility by turning skin cells into eggs capable of producing early human embryos.

The development offers a potential avenue for in vitro gametogenesis — the process of creating gametes — to treat infertility for women of advanced maternal age or those who are unable to produce viable eggs due to previous treatment of cancer or other causes.

Research develops proof of concept for treatment of infertility affecting millions.

Oregon Health & Science University mourns the passing of Joe Robertson, M.D., M.B.A., who spent more than four decades serving the people of Oregon as a retinal surgeon, and led OHSU as president for more than a decade of dramatic growth and change, until retiring in 2018.

“Our hearts go out to his family, and the extensive circle of friends, supporters and admirers around the state and well beyond.”

Robertson’s vision for serving all of Oregon’s 98,000 square miles will have lasting impacts for generations to come.
