Shalom House, Inc.

Shalom House, Inc. At Shalom House we believe that when people have the appropriate support they can get better and lead fulfilling lives in the community.

Shalom House offers hope for adults living with severe mental illness by providing an array of community based mental health services and a choice of quality housing that help people lead stable and fulfilling lives in the community. Our model for success is grounded on the following four bases:

Housing-

Shalom House provides a choice of affordable, decent housing ranging from transitional housing and group homes to independent apartments. Individualized Services-

Shalom House offers a variety of services to help our clients gain the skills and confidence they need to achieve their own goals and to successfully reintegrate into the community. These services include community integration, skills support, peer support and many others. Inclusive Atmosphere-

We believe that mental illness is best managed when consumers and providers of mental health services work together. We don't make decisions for our clients, we help them learn how to make their own choices and provide them with ongoing support to ensure success. Fighting the Stigma-

Shalom House works in the community to reduce the fear and stigma associated with mental illness so that those who suffer from mental illness may flourish in the mainstream of community life.

Love looks like a key in your hand and a door that locks behind you. A safe place to land. A place that's yours. 🏠 Stable housing changes everything. It's a vehicle for recovery, it's safe from the elements, it's somewhere that allows you to focus on your future. That's why we do this work, housing folks in 26 properties across Maine. 💚

Love doesn’t always happen face-to-face. Sometimes, it happens behind a screen.

Our IT department keeps our systems running so staff can focus on what matters most, supporting our clients. From maintaining computers to managing data, their work helps ensure records stay secure, and stories are shared with care.

This is love in action: quietly making sure everything works so others can fully show up for those who need us.

In January, a woman we serve reached out to ask for help paying her rent. This client, a single mother working full-time, fell on hard times around the holidays and found herself so far behind in rent that she thought she would never catch up. She had seven days to pay or she would be evicted. Luckily, her Housing Specialist, Cori, knows that we have our Basic Needs Fund that helps cover emergency expenses like this. With support from the landlord willing to enter into a payment plan, and $1,000 from the Basic Needs Fund, this client was able to catch up on rent and keep herself and child stably housed. We want to recognize this client for reaching out when she needed help, and Cori, for going above and beyond. That's love in action. 💚

Stable housing doesn’t just happen, it’s maintained through care and communication, and through Ashley!

Ashley is our Compliance Property Manager. She ensures that we are following all rules and regulations for low-income housing, while also working behind the scenes to create processes that keep the department running smoothly. She literally keeps the doors to our homes open.

That’s what love in action looks like: helping people stay housed, supported, and secure. 💚

Sometimes love looks like groceries. 💚Sometimes it looks like heat, medication, or a bus pass. Our Basic Needs Fund helps people facing unexpected financial emergencies, preventing a small crisis from becoming a mental health crisis. This is love in action.

After 17 years of leadership, our Executive Director, Mary Haynes-Rodgers, will be retiring in September.

Mary joined Shalom House in December 2008, stepping into the role with great appreciation of the work Shalom was doing in the community. Over the years, she has guided Shalom through many seasons, moments of growth and change, remaining steadfast in her belief in our mission and in the people we serve.

Mary’s leadership has been defined by her commitment to offer hope to those living with severe mental illness. She has worked closely with staff, our board, and the community, to ensure that this mission remained at the center of every decision, even during the most challenging times.

While we will miss Mary’s daily presence, we celebrate her well-earned retirement and thank her for 17 years of extraordinary service. Shalom House will forever be shaped by her leadership, and we wish her joy and fulfillment in this next chapter.

As we look ahead, we are beginning the search for our next Executive Director. Those interested in learning more can view the position here:https://starboardleadership.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/SH-Leadership-Statement_ED_FINAL.pdf
