Shalom House, Inc.

Shalom House, Inc. At Shalom House we believe that when people have the appropriate support they can get better and lead fulfilling lives in the community.

Shalom House offers hope for adults living with severe mental illness by providing an array of community based mental health services and a choice of quality housing that help people lead stable and fulfilling lives in the community. Our model for success is grounded on the following four bases:

Housing-

Shalom House provides a choice of affordable, decent housing ranging from transitional housi

ng and group homes to independent apartments. Individualized Services-

Shalom House offers a variety of services to help our clients gain the skills and confidence they need to achieve their own goals and to successfully reintegrate into the community. These services include community integration, skills support, peer support and many others. Inclusive Atmosphere-

We believe that mental illness is best managed when consumers and providers of mental health services work together. We don't make decisions for our clients, we help them learn how to make their own choices and provide them with ongoing support to ensure success. Fighting the Stigma-

Shalom House works in the community to reduce the fear and stigma associated with mental illness so that those who suffer from mental illness may flourish in the mainstream of community life.

We are thrilled to share that our very own Abby Spadone has been selected as Shalom House’s next Executive Director!

Abby has been an integral part of the Shalom House team since 2017 and has served as our Clinical Director since 2019. Her deep commitment to our mission, our staff, and the people we serve makes her the best fit to guide us into the next chapter of this work.

Following a comprehensive nationwide search led by our board of directors, we are proud to say that our next leader was already here at home. Abby will step into this role in July following Mary Haynes-Rodgers retirement.

Please join us in congratulating Abby on this exciting new role!

We are excited to introduce our new board member, Keren Elie! Keren is currently an Asset Manager at Evernorth, serving as the primary asset management contact for over 70 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit properties. Prior to her work at Evernorth, Keren was a property manager at Avesta, serving her community by facilitating housing opportunities and community stability.

When asked why she joined the board at Shalom House, Keren said, "When people lack safe, stable, and secure places to live, mental illness can become increasingly stigmatizing, destabilizing, and isolating. Ensuring that people can access and maintain housing is paramount to breaking barriers and creating physical and emotional safety, from which pathways to healing emerge. I am looking forward to being a part of Shalom House’s important work supporting people in achieving their goals, beginning – but not ending at – quality housing that promotes dignity and respect, and can (perhaps for the first time for some) feel like home."

Please join us in welcoming Keren to Shalom House!

To celebrate Earth Day, one of our Clinical Interns from the University of Southern Maine organized a group gardening day for staff and clients. Together they learned about gardening, planted herbs, vegetables, and flowers, and enjoyed lunch together. Here are the highlights! 🌎💚

We are excited to share that we have totally transformed the community room at Shalom Apartments in Portland! This space is where clients come together to cook, talk, create art, meet with staff, and so much more. Thanks to grant funding, we were able to replace furniture, appliances, repaint the walls, and truly create a space that feels warm and welcoming, and that supports our clients in meeting their goals! Here are the before and after photos!💚

A huge thank you to the Harvard Pilgrim Portland team for inviting us to their office yesterday to talk about this work and for packing 100 hygiene bags for the people we serve. For many of our clients basic items like soap, shampoo, and hand sanitizer are simply unaffordable, and going without can take a toll on their well being. Their generosity reminds our community that they are valued and supported. We are so grateful to Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and their commitment to serving those who need it. 💚

This is Natasha. She is one of the first people clients talk to when they call us. Recently, when someone reached out struggling to afford food, she knew exactly what to do. She pulled together pantry staples, secured a Hannaford gift card through our Basic Needs Fund, and made sure they had what they needed for the week. Her compassion makes a difference every single day. Thank you for all you do to support our community, Natasha!
