🎃 Today marks our 9th Annual Halloween Costume Contest - which is now a named event in honor of Jonathan Cintron, a department member we lost October of 2022.

A lover of Halloween, Jonathan approached his costumes with the same passion, detail and dedication he displayed on a day-to-day basis at OHSU. We remember him and all of his passions he was kind enough to share with us all.

A recent Nature.com publication highlights OHSU's release of the deidentified images dataset from the MoleMapper app to the biomedical research community to enable quantitative analysis of skin lesions from smartphones.

These photos, collected over six years, represents the largest publicly available dataset of consumer-collected smartphone images of pigmented skin lesions. Researchers will now be able to study these images taken by smartphones to analyze the utility of using smartphone images in a medical context. Full article at link in bio 🤳

We mourn the loss of Dr. Neil A. Swanson, former Chair of the OHSU Department of Dermatology. Dr. Swanson helped shape the department and University that we are today, serving many key leadership roles across OHSU. In Dermatology, he recruited and mentored many faculty to who continue to form the core of our department. He expanded our clinical programs, and established a robust basic science research focus in skin cancer.

Clinically, he was an expert in Mohs surgery in reconstruction, where he published over 130 journal articles and served in leadership roles for national organizations. He enjoyed tremendously the training of dermatology residents and fellows — he trained more than 30 Mohs surgical fellows.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Swanson cherished life outside of medicine, especially his love of horses and the ranch life. We extend our condolences to Dr. Swanson's family, friends and colleagues during this time of loss. His vision and legacy will continue to inspire our work for years to come.

OUTREACH: Our mobile outreach team partnered with Amy Snow, PA-C of Project Happy Face at the Pendleton Dress Up Parade last weekend! Along with handing out sunscreen and raising sun safety awareness to hundreds, Amy identified an invasive nodular melanoma, performed an on-site biopsy, and secured follow-up care.

This quiet act of heroism captures the heart of our mission: serving Oregonians where they are. Special thanks to Jordan Gillespie and Jaclyn Roland-McGowan for working behind the scenes to make this possible.

BREAKING: New research has found that applying a full-body moisturizer to a child every day starting before 9 weeks of age can lower the chance of them developing eczema by age two.

The CASCADE Study, led by OHSU's Dr. Eric Simpson, was a randomized clinical trial that included nearly 1,300 babies from across 25 clinics in the U.S. The study examined a comparison of babies who did, and did not receive daily moisturizer, and found that those who received the daily moisturizer had a 16-24% lower risk of developing eczema by age 2.

This research identifies a safe, easy, and potentially practical preventative measure for eczema, especially for babies not already identified as high-risk. To learn more, including the full publication and interviews visit the link in our bio!
