Jewish Family & Child Service - Portland, Oregon

Jewish Family & Child Service - Portland, Oregon Jewish Family & Child Service (JFCS) provides social services that improve the lives of adults, families, and children in the Jewish and general communities.

Jewish Family & Child Service (JFCS) has assisted Portland-area residents for 70 years. We help marginalized people of all faiths and backgrounds realize their full potential, and serve diverse communities that have evolving needs. In particular, JFCS excels at helping vulnerable seniors and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live with dignity and autonomy. JFCS offers a wide

range of human services including individual, couple, family, and group counseling, services for seniors and people with disabilities, emergency assistance and referrals during time of crisis, services for immigrant and refugees and Holocaust survivors. All our services are offered without regard to age, race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

At April’s Senior Social Hour, JFCS and CNS seniors enjoyed the powerful and moving film, "Eleanor the Great". With classic movie snacks in hand (popcorn, twizzlers, and junior mints — yum!), we enjoyed a movie that beautifully balanced grief, humor, friendship, and loss. Thank you, Congregation Neveh Shalom, for partnering with us and hosting this special afternoon.

Join us at the next Senior Social Hour on May 19 at EJC!

At JFCS, we meet people in some of the most difficult moments of their lives, and in those moments, we offer more than services—we offer care, connection, and a path forward. On May 7th, we are coming together in support of that vital work and invite you to join us. Your support helps us provide services, including care for Holocaust Survivors, mental health counseling, food assistance, emergency financial aid, and socialization programs for older adults.

JFCS, Congregation Beth Israel, WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood, and Congregation Neveh Shalom Sisterhood came together to host the 65th JFCS Community Seder earlier this week—and what a joyful celebration it was.

More than 70 clients, family members, and volunteers gathered for this beautiful Seder led by CBI’s Cantor Rayna Green. The afternoon began with sweet singing of the Passover story by children from the Jennie’s preschool class, and included students from Portland Jewish Academy asking the Four Questions. One guest, a Holocaust Survivor, shared that celebrating Passover was forbidden when she was growing up, and how grateful she felt to now celebrate freely in community.

We are grateful to the dozens of volunteers who helped bring this gathering to life—from planning to setting beautiful tables and driving the clients to and from the event. Thank you as well to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany for helping make this meaningful afternoon possible. It was a beautiful celebration of tradition, resilience, and community joy.

Teenagers are busy and JFCS is here to meet you where you are. QJ Roots, JFCS’ q***r Jewish support group for young people ages 15-18, is now meeting on Zoom. This group offers a safe, affirming space for teens to explore the intersections of identity, community, and lived experience. Whether you’re navigating life transitions, relationships, gender identity, sexuality, or the stress of current events, you’re not alone. Together, we’ll share stories, build resilience, and reduce isolation through connection, reflection, and resource-sharing.

This group is free and registration is not required. Next zoom meeting is Tuesday, May 5th at 7pm. Get the zoom link here: https://www.jfcs-portland.org/qj-roots/

Join JFCS‘ Senior Social Hour and Congregation Neveh Shalom’s Wondering Jews 65+ for a special movie matinee of Eleanor the Great, starring June Squibb as a sharp-tongued 94-year-old woman navigating an unexpected new chapter after a loss.

We’ll enjoy popcorn and classic movie snacks while watching Eleanor relocate to New York, where a small misunderstanding at a support group grows into a larger story - both funny and touching - about memory, identity, and the complicated ways we carry the people we love with us.

Come for the movie, stay for the company—this is a relaxed afternoon to gather, connect, and enjoy a good film together. Free to attend but RSVP required. Learn more and RSVP here: https://members.nevehshalom.org/event/MMETG26
