JFCS’ Counseling program provides compassionate, person-centered, trauma-informed mental-health services to adults, children, teens, couples and families facing life’s challenges. Our team is currently accepting new clients, so we want you to meet the team!

Say hi to Doug Ruth, LCSW, JFCS' Clinical Director. Here's what he says about his role: "The clinical director role at JFCS lets me hold both the intimate and the expansive. I work alongside clients while also building programs and supporting staff and other clinicians. Being present in direct care keeps me engaged and open, and shaping systems lets that care ripple outward. It’s a gift to do work that feels this connected, human, and alive."

To receive mental health support from our counselors, contact our Intake Manager at 503-226-7079 x650 or through our online intake form. For more about our counseling services and all our clinicians, visit our counseling page: https://www.jfcs-portland.org/services/counseling/

Join JFCS‘ Senior Social Hour and Congregation Neveh Shalom’s Wondering Jews 65+ for a special movie matinee of Eleanor the Great, starring June Squibb as a sharp-tongued 94-year-old woman navigating an unexpected new chapter after a loss.

We’ll enjoy popcorn and classic movie snacks while watching Eleanor relocate to New York, where a small misunderstanding at a support group grows into a larger story - both funny and touching - about memory, identity, and the complicated ways we carry the people we love with us.

Come for the movie, stay for the company—this is a relaxed afternoon to gather, connect, and enjoy a good film together. Free to attend but RSVP required. Learn more and RSVP here: https://members.nevehshalom.org/event/MMETG26

JFCS and Upstream Access welcomed 20 participants—including adults with disabilities and family members—for an afternoon of lunch, learning, and community. Together we explored simple ways to prepare for emergencies, talked about managing stress, and created personalized Mental Health Resilience Kits filled with sensory and calming tools to support emotional well-being. Participants explored hands-on stations like the Fidget Zone, Color Me Calm, and Squishy & Fun Creation Station—choosing items that help them feel calm, grounded, and prepared for stressful moments.

It was a warm, joyful afternoon of learning from one another and building community. We’re grateful to our partners at Upstream Access and to everyone who joined us for such a welcoming and uplifting event.

To jump-start the holiday celebration, Congregation Neveh Shalom hosted 30 of JFCS’ Holocaust Survivor Services clients and their families for a hamantaschen bake last week. The festive event included hamantaschen making, socializing, and an adorable performance by the Neveh Shalom’s Foundation School kids. A big thank you to volunteers from JFCS, PDX Hillel, and Neveh Shalom's Sisterhood, who drove clients to the event, helped clients roll the dough, baked the cookies, and made the event extra sweet.
