Pelvic floor training is often simplified to โ€œjust do your Kegels,โ€ but research shows itโ€™s much more nuanced than that.

The pelvic floor is a complex system of muscles and connective tissue that supports the pelvic organs and contributes to spinal stability. Dysfunction can be influenced by many factors, including pregnancy, posture, lifestyle, and muscle coordination.

One key finding from the research is that there is no single, standardized exercise prescription that works for everyone. Effective training needs to be individualized and consider strength, endurance, and coordination โ€” not just repetition.
This is why personalized care matters so much when supporting pelvic health during pregnancy and postpartum.

Breathing and core stability are more connected than many people realize.

Research shows that muscles used for respiration โ€” including the diaphragm, deep abdominals, and pelvic floor โ€” also contribute to lumbo-pelvic stabilization. When breathing mechanics or posture becomes inefficient, it may contribute to musculoskeletal complaints such as low back pain.

The study describes a therapeutic exercise called the 90/90 bridge with ball and balloon, designed to improve breathing mechanics, enhance neuromuscular control of core muscles, and support spinal stability.
