March is National Social Work Month, and we’re proud to recognize the incredible social workers at Morrison Child and Family Services. Often working behind the scenes, social workers support children and families through some of life’s most complex challenges—navigating trauma, advocating for those in need, and helping build stronger, healthier communities.

At Morrison, our employees are our backbone. They celebrate every client milestone, big and small—from a student graduating one of our programs to a family finding stability. Their compassion, expertise, and dedication make a lasting difference every day. This March, we aren’t just celebrating a profession; we’re honoring the people who choose to do the work that so often goes unnoticed.

Sleep is essential for growing minds. In recognition of World Sleep Day, we’re highlighting how healthy sleep habits support kids’ and teens’ mental health, mood, and learning. Sleep helps young people regulate emotions, manage stress, and stay focused at school. But many families struggle with sleep routines, especially with busy schedules and screen time.

Here are a few tips to help kids get the rest they need:

🔹 Kids ages 6-12 need 9-12 hours of sleep each night. 🔹 Teens need 8-10 hours.
🔹 Try to keep consistent bedtimes and wake-up times.
🔹 Turn off screen 30-60 minutes before bed.
🔹 Create a calm nighttime routine.

When Clint enrolled in the Parent Mentor Program, he wasn’t sure what to expect. He’d turned a corner in recovery but still had a long path ahead of him to reunify with his children. He was surprised to find out his mentor was someone he’d once used drugs with, now clean and raising his two children – the exact thing Clint greatly wanted. In his mentor, Clint saw someone like him; someone he could trust.

Years later, Clint is now a Parent Mentor himself. He has custody of his two daughters and his niece. He mentors dads working through substance abuse treatment and family reunification, using his experiences as a roadmap to guide them. He is passionate about working with dads, a group he sees as being largely pushed to the side by the family reunification system. A father himself, he wants to acknowledge the capacity of men to be caregivers and give them the support to recover while keeping their parenthood in mind.

Did you know that young children are expelled or suspended from early education settings at rates more than three times higher than K-12 students nationwide? This can deeply interrupt learning and harm long-term development. One of the main goals of Morrison’s Infant & Early Childhood Consultation Program (IECMHC) is to reduce expulsion rates among young children.

Our two-pronged prevention-based approach revolves around partnering with the adults who care for young children in early learning settings and also working with families directly. This program helps prevent exclusionary practices by equipping caregivers with practical strategies, reflective support, and coaching, so children get the support they need to learn and grow. Our CEO and VP of Development had the opportunity to meet yesterday with Julia Brim-Edwards, Multnomah County District 3 Commissioner, to share more about the work we do here at Morrison Child and Family Services. We’re encouraged by our shared priorities, particularly addressing the critical impacts of mental health and substance use disorder on children and families across our community. And, of course, Flapjack the goat made sure to steal the spotlight during the meeting...

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and support teens in building healthy, respectful relationships. Dating violence isn’t always obvious. It can show up as constant monitoring, pressure to share passwords or locations, or isolation from friends and family. In today’s digital world, these behaviors are often framed as “care,” but they can be serious red flags. This month, we encourage teens and caregivers to look beyond appearances and focus on how a relationship feels. Healthy relationships are built on trust, respect, and boundaries—not fear or control.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing warning signs, help is available. Confidential support for teens is available through Love is Respect, an extension of the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Text LOVEIS to 22522 to connect with a trained advocate.
