Spooltown

Spooltown Prototyping and production sewing for small businesses. All handmade in Portland, Oregon. Needle holes are forever, so you've got to get it right the first time.

We're a small-run sewing factory in Portland, OR, specializing in handbags and accessories. We excel at working with finicky fabrics like leather, faux-leather and waxed canvas. We can do most parts of the design process in-house, including designing for production, sourcing, tech packs, patterning, prototyping, sampling and production runs. Spooltown runs production for many established brands, emphasizing rigorous quality standards, communication, and lasting relationships. We have considerable experience working with start-up brands and can help you get your product to market. We believe in visible American manufacturing. To us, that means that we work in an open environment with loads of natural light and offer a living wage, health insurance and a great working environment for our employees. Spooltown takes pride in what we do, and how we do it. Cheers

Sara & Dana - Co-owners, Spooltown

Wondering where we went after going radio silent in early March? Well, like any small biz with a high level of scrappy tenacity - we pivoted. We paid our employees for a week to stay at home, assess, and figure out what was right for them.

Then we asked ourselves - how can we be helpers, stay safe AND stay alive as a business? We rode the wild ride of supply chain inadequacies and increasing demand for PPE and then began producing face masks for local hospitals and frontline workers. We've been deep in that world since mid March.

Our first priority was the safety and healthy of everyone within Spooltown - still is. For those that felt comfortable working, we spread everyone and everything way out in the shop - like WAY out. We implemented an intense new cleaning regimen, tool washing stations, and and and and. (Our chapped hands may never be the same, but we've never been more disinfected and sanitized.)

Now that we're all looking toward an actual reopen, the need is more focused on public everyday use masks. AND we are ready to give you bulk mask packs in an array of colors!

We plan to launch the mask offerings later this week - watch IG and our site for that. We're also going to offer up our stock Spooltown tote with a lovely print inspired by the mural in our cutting room. 25% of proceeds from sale of the totes will be donated to Oregon Food Bank to help fight hunger in these uncertain times.

Cover Your Face and Keep the Peoples Safe out there, okay?

We miss you, more soon.

It's so strange and fortuitous how things come full circle. When we started Spooltown 8 years ago, we split off from Queen Bee by Rebecca Pearcy (where Dana and Sara worked together for 5 years). Queen Bee was our first client, sold us our first sewing machine, and referred our first employees. Rebecca Pearcy's support was the catalyst that made us a real business, and we're forever grateful.

This year (in December), Rebecca is closing Queen Bee after 23 years in business to focus on her textile line. It's bittersweet. We're celebrating change with her, and 23 wonderful years in a really tough retail climate. We're sad for her loyal customers (many of whom have been with her since the early days). And... we're making the last of their bags! It's been about 3 years since we've made a Truckette, but it's all coming back as we plow through piles and piles of them for the next few months.

It feels good to help close a chapter and open a new one for Rebecca. Small business has a life cycle, and we're proud to be here supporting makers start to finish.

As a factory, we rarely get the free time and space to exercise our own creativity. There’s too much pressure to keep our staff busy, to develop and produce other people’s ideas, to do moremoremore.

But we have a shop full of extremely creative people and those ideas are itching to be known. Next week we have a little time, and we’re planning to use it to make some big changes to our space. Stay tuned, friends. is about to get funky.

Pro tip: Small biz is exhausting for the whole team. Sometimes you have to work really hard to carve out space for fun.

Thank you PDX for an amazing factory sale! Your reward is this timelapse of setup / stampede. I recommend watching it once for people and once for that Incredible Disappearing Leather Table.
