WHY DO MY HANDS SLIP IN DOWNDOG? ✋

We get asked this question a whole bunch, but the first thing that I’d like you to know is... it’s normal for this to happen to newer practitioners.

You might believe that its simply because your hands are sweaty, however, even with sweaty palms (with the right engagement and muscular development) you can keep your hands from slipping in downdog

Here are 4 reasons your hands might be slipping:

1. There is direct pressure in your hands and wrists/you’re not using your legs enough.

FIX IT: make sure there are no wrinkles in your wrists in downdog, you’re pressing up with your sitting bones, down with the outer edges of your feet, squeeze your thighs on.

2. You’re slouching in your shoulders, dropping your heart or trying to press your heart to your thighs instead of engaging your chest muscles.

FIX IT: Make sure you can see your biceps in your peripheral vision in downdog and hug in with your forearms like you’re squeezing a beach ball.

3. You haven’t developed hasta bandha or the correct hand strength.

FIX IT: Press into the L shape of your thumb and index finger with your palms and fingers spread wide in downdog.

4. You aren’t practicing with an experienced teacher who will guide you to proper alignment in downdog

FIX IT: Come to my class and let me help you get aligned mentally and physically.

Ps I am leading a beginner yoga series it’s 4 weeks total and we will cover these nitty gritty techniques that will help you feel confident in your body and on your yoga journey!

A couple ways to use your pulling muscles in your yoga practice for strength, stability and injury prevention.

Learn to live life skillfully.

What you practice on the mat walks off of the mat with you. Practice discretion, acceptance, discomfort, joy, empowerment, breath, work, poses – learning to befriend your body and mind.

Collecting skills to help you regulate and stay present when it’s needed the most.

Trauma sensitive Yoga gives choice, a safe space where you are seen and heard, some structure to lean into while maintaining autonomy.

with a trained teacher, power Vinyasa can also be a trauma sensitive practice. One potent hour without extra distractions to learn how to be friend your body in mind while building resilience, clarity, and confidence.

Join me on the mat. Tomorrow 10 am slow flow and 12 pm vinyasa

Pratyahara

The 5th limb.

Giving your mind the space to process and assimilate thoughts and experiences in order to shift to concentration and meditation.

This is the part people run from.

It’s important to practice. That way you’re only carrying forward what you need and when faced with moments requiring action, you can act in alignment with your values and not from a place of trigger.

It’s especially important in these times.
Step 1 complete the stress cycle with challenging physical activity

Step 2 give yourself time with no music and eyes closed to just watch your thoughts unattached.

Step 3 rest

Step 4 take value aligned actions

💡 You believe innocent people should have legal representation in the aftermath of government induced violence, donate to an org that represents them.

💡 You believe everyone should be able to eat food volunteer at the food bank, soup kitchen or make a donation.

💡You know someone having a tough time, feeling left out or being bullied, carve out time to sit with them, have tea and share stories.

The world needs you connected and regulated right now. The first step is to sit with the thoughts and watch them. You’ll know when and what action to take from a place of clarity and not urgency (capitalism).

Practice with me this evening 5:30 pm Vinyasa and 7pm slow flow and Myofascial release.

“I thought we were supposed to train the mind but stopping the thoughts?!”

The only way out is through, my friend.

How you befriend your mind is to feed it, watch it, then allow it to experience.

The teaching passed down create an understanding and pathway with which to follow. Give the mind direction and it’ll curiously explore. This is jhana Yoga.

Shraddha- truth that sparks your personal connection with practice

The catalyst for your journey.
The pearl in the oyster 🦪
The diamond in the coal 💎

One tiny moment that opened not only your eyes but your whole soul, creating a crack that this glimmer of truth shines though.

This is truly what defines the Sisya or pupil of yoga and sets them on the path towards self mastery. Not in the attempt to prove they’re a good person, not driven by ego, but a desire to be absorbed in truth for longer and longer amounts of time in order to know it and share it.

in a one hour class, we can barely scratch the surface of what this means how it shows up and how to consistently consistently practice yoga alongside the physical postures, the breath and the meditation.

This weekend is an opportunity to do just that, to explore the depths of your practice to peek at that truth, repeatedly consistently and to hold it close to your heart remembering why and how you practice and the path that you’re on.

There’s still time to sign up for this weekend long immersion . Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday. When exploring the role of being a student of Yoga, no Stone will be left unturned.

I’m holding the door open. You’ll just need to step through ❤️

Pages of books.
Words combined, that pour into our minds and our hearts.

What do you feed your mind?
Your heart?
Your life?

Learning by mirror neurons never ceases, how incredible is that?!

When you model empathy, kindness, compassion and joy children AND grownups alike model your behavior. Impulse control, labeling and feeling emotions, sticking to hard things - all of this behaviors are CONTAGIOUS to those watching.

It’s circular.
They model it back, reminding you of this brilliant gift of life.
And you both model it to the world around you.

We are by design. We’re given this canvas to smudge and smear, to mess up and correct, and to share with the world around us.

This is it.

Read, pay attention, soak in the words, make your own words about art or describe how it makes you feel in your body.

When someone asks you how you’ve been, give them a color; “I’ve been dark teal lately, almost a caspian. And you?”

This one’s not just for the kids. It’s for you too.

“This is your rare and wonderful life.”

Both.
Your practice is important
And
It feels hard to do the practice.

Who would you like to be and what experience would you like to have?

On the mat, in the pose, in your mind, in your breath, in your life, in this world.

Decide, then practice it consistently, repeatedly and with the intention of being there. Without attachment.

Deep dive into your practice with me this weekend in an Urban Immersion.

Deepen your practice, shift your perspective, nurture your mind, challenge your body, and show up in your life.
