I cannot underscore this enough!!!

From the article: Crisis care for children, notes Chambers, tends to only focus on the child. While that might sound intuitive, not incorporating a young person’s family puts the child back into a situation that was likely problematic. “You can’t address a child’s crisis without addressing family dynamics,” she says. “That’s not because parents or siblings don’t want the child to get better,” says Chambers, “but because we often don’t know what’s triggering them in the first place.” Furthermore, families need to know how best to support the child. When her daughter was hospitalized, staff interacted minimally with Chambers and her husband. “We kept saying, ‘Hey, we need support services too—we need the knowledge, skills, and resources to support her.’”

Crisis care for children tends to only focus on the child. Yet a child’s crisis can’t be addressed without addressing family dynamics.

Last year, National Federation of Families surveyed families to better understand the incredible challenges so many were facing. 1,100 families completed the anonymous survey. NFF created this infographic of the results. It can be found here: https://49bf42da-b858-4965-a674-2901508f2c7d.usrfiles.com...

Today, NFF invites parents to participate in the second edition of our “How is School Affecting Children’s and Families’ Mental Health During COVID-19” survey. Open to all caregivers with children of any age living at home who are in an educational program - at any level - or who chose to leave an educational program during the pandemic. Hearing from as many families as possible will only strengthen our ability to represent family voice.

From the attached article. This is our imperative of these troubled times.

“Medicaid alone will not solve this crisis: Commercial insurers must recognize that promoting children’s health means meeting kids’ mental health needs. Stronger benefit packages that cover behavioral health services and interventions for children and families must be offered. Health care providers, especially pediatricians and primary care providers, including community health centers, should focus on prevention, integrate behavioral health into their practices, and adopt whole family approaches. It is also critical for the federal government to enforce the parity laws that require private insurers to cover behavioral health services.”

In a new HealthAffairs article, Vikki Wachino, Richard Frank, Keith Humphreys, and John O’Brien discuss what preventions and early interventions can be taken to promote mental healthy kids.
