Regardless of the disposition, whether burial or cremation, funerals serve a valuable and necessary purpose. The business has been owned and operated by the Griffith Family for four generations and continues its legacy of service. The Barbur and Comstock families also played a key role in the evolution of the business. The Griffith family has ties to Oregon dating back to the late 1800’s. We are dedicated to providing families with personal assistance in their time of need and delivering dignified funeral services. We serve families of all faiths and cultures with funeral and memorial needs. As a company, we are environmentally conscious and have worked with the City of Portland to enhance natural habitat on our property. Riverview Abbey is socially responsible as well. The company donates to many local charities and religious institutions. We employ eleven people with wages and benefits that provide a good quality of life. Riverview Abbey complies with all state and federal regulations and is a member of the Oregon Funeral Directors Association (OFDA).

“Special thanks to Bill, a wonderful man. Positive, helpful information provided when researching funeral services by phone. There was a little uncertainty about the death certificates; how long they would take to be processed, when I would be notified, etc. But it worked out ok. Absolutely recommend their services. One of the hardest things I hear in funeral service is, “We’ll deal with it later.”

I’ve sat with adult children who bring a parent in because they understand that preplanning matters. We begin the conversation. The intentions are sincere. And then life happens. Schedules fill up. Something urgent comes along. The appointment gets postponed. “We’ll reschedule.”

Sometimes… that reschedule never comes.

Not because anyone didn’t care. But because avoidance is powerful, and loss rarely arrives at a convenient time. When a parent passes before plans are in place, the weight of regret can feel overwhelming. The stress is real. Families are left making emotional decisions in the middle of grief.

Preplanning isn’t about being morbid. It’s about being thoughtful.

It’s about giving your family clarity instead of confusion, peace instead of pressure, and one less burden to carry when the day comes.

“Riverview Abbey knows how to take care of its clients. Tim Proctor, their funeral director is one of the best human beings I've ever met. I had called several funeral homes to discuss our unique situation wherein my sister-in-law's sister passed away suddenly in Portland and our family wanted her remains to be flown to India. There isn't much help online available to guide you through this process. All the funeral homes that I called said it would take a minimum of 3–4 weeks for the remains to leave Portland. When asked if they would be able to work with us to try to make it happen sooner, everyone said that's not possible.
Not Tim Proctor of Riverview Abbey. While he said he was new to this process of sending remains overseas, he was committed to help us find a faster method. He was open to collaboration when it was necessary and in other areas, he pushed himself and his resources to the limit to make sure our tight timeline was met. He really jumped into helping us and through the process, it showed that he truly cared as if he were helping his own family member. I was touched by his prompt responses and attention to detail and he truly went above and beyond what I assume his regular role calls for.

The sudden death of my wife was extremely traumatic and Ryan's calm, caring manner, his flexibility, patience, respect and willingness to 'go the extra mile' will forever stay will me.
