Reposting from because it is too good not to share!!

Mouth breathing may be common, but it is not normal. And we need more providers speaking to patients about the importance of nasal breathing and tongue posture, it has a domino effect on the function throughout the body, and this starts at infancy.

Uncover the root cause, reach out today for guidance if you or a loved one may need some help!

I’ve had the privilege of hearing Melissa speak several times throughout my myo career, and every single time she brings a level of passion and energy that reignites my own 🔥. This 6 week course of Myofunctional Therapy and Orthodontics was no exception!

A huge thank you to and for continuing to educate, inspire, and support providers in this field. Collaborative care with orthodontists, ENTs, and other allied providers is essential — not only for achieving the best outcomes for our patients, but also for breaking down the barriers so many families face when navigating airway and oral dysfunction. Grateful to be part of this important work.

Hey parents! 👋
If your child always seems stuffy or tends to keep their mouth open, this book could be a great tool for you. It helps reinforce the importance of nasal breathing in a fun, relatable way—and explains why a nose that isn’t used often can stay congested.

Instead of feeling like you’re constantly reminding your child to “close your mouth,” this cute and interactive book gets their growing minds thinking about healthy breathing habits all on its own. 🌟📚

🌙 Why Lip Seal Matters for Healthy Sleep & Airway Function 🌙

Did you know that maintaining a proper lip seal during sleep plays a major role in how your tongue supports your airway?

When your lips are gently closed, your tongue can rest fully against the roof of your mouth (palate) — creating a natural palatal suction that keeps the back of the tongue elevated. This stable tongue posture helps keep the airway open, promoting smoother breathing and better oxygen flow throughout the night.

But when lips fall open, the tongue often drops low and back… contributing to partial airway collapse, snoring, or even obstructive sleep symptoms.

✨ A simple change — improving nasal breathing and lip seal — can support:
• Better tongue-to-palate contact (better vagal tone!)
• Improved airway stability
• More restorative, quiet sleep

Myofunctional therapy helps retrain these muscle patterns so the lips, tongue, and airway can work together in harmony.

If your child (or you!) struggles with mouth breathing or restless sleep, this may be an important piece of the puzzle.

Did you know that these signs in your child’s sleep and breathing can be leading to big things happening beneath the surface?

Some early indicators to look out for:
✨ Mouth breathing (especially during sleep)
✨Snoring or audible breathing at night
✨Restless sleep, stomach sleeping or frequent tossing and turning
✨Morning irritability or daytime fatigue
✨Teeth grinding, open-mouth posture, or crowded teeth

We inform parents all the time this may be common but it is NOT normal, and what may seem “normal” now can actually be the body’s way of compensating — and without early support, it can impact growth, development, and overall health.

✨ Early screening matters.
Many providers don’t discuss the importance of nasal breathing, lips closed, and tongue resting on the roof of the mouth — but these foundational habits play a major role in airway development and whole-body wellness.

Early identification allows us to support your child’s growth in the right direction — setting them up for healthier breathing, sleep, and development for years to come.

If you have concerns or want to learn more about screening, we’d love to help guide you through the process.

Your nose knows best!
👃 It’s designed to filter, warm, and humidify the air you breathe, helping your body stay healthy and your airways stay clear.

👉 But when we stop breathing through our nose—whether from a cold, allergies, or just habit—we lose all those benefits.

Here’s the tricky part: even after you’ve been sick, if you keep breathing through your mouth, your congestion may hang around longer simply because your nose isn’t being used! 🚫👄

✅ Getting back to nasal breathing is key to reducing congestion and keeping your airway working the way it’s meant to.

🌟 Did You Know? Some everyday struggles may actually be signs of oral dysfunction — and many families don’t even realize it. 👄👃💤

Here are a few symptoms that could be linked to improper function with the muscles of the mouth and face:

😴 Sleep troubles – restless sleep, snoring, mouth breathing
👂 Frequent ear infections – can actually stem from an incorrect swallow pattern
🗣️ Speech delays or articulation challenges
🍽️ Feeding difficulties – picky eating, gagging, or slow chewing
🤧 Chronic nasal congestion or seasonal allergies
🤢 Digestive issues – swallowing air or improper chewing
📏 Forward head posture – a compensatory adaptation for poor airway function

These signs might seem unrelated, but they often stem from oral and facial muscle dysfunction that affects growth, breathing, and nervous system regulation.

💡 Addressing the root cause with myofunctional therapy and collaborative care can make a world of difference!
