We have exciting news! The BALL PITS and waiting room are now open! We still have to wear masks because we are a healthcare facility, but hey, one step closer to normalcy!

People don't often realize how Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) affects others. This meme is just one example of a tactile sensory processing disorder, but it is a nice reminder of just how overly sensitive the body can be to touch, sight, sound, taste and smell. We don't realize how excruciatingly painful ordinary sensory input is for people with SPD.

COVID Guidelines for In-Person Visits

Based on the responses from the survey, I felt the need to clarify a few things. The bulleted items below are Strict Guidelines set by the State that we must follow. Specific details about our procedures will be sent in a future email.

What do you need to do?

-Wear A Mask. Everyone over the age of 11 (unless you have a medical exemption)
-IF you cannot wear a mask, please bring an alternative face covering or wait in the car. This is mandatory.
-WHY? OSHA! We will receive a fine and can be shut down.
-No Waiting in the Waiting Room
-No drink station. Bring you own bottles.
-No visitors. Just you and your child.
-Maintain social distancing at all times.
-Wait in your car until the therapist comes out to get you for your turn.

What we will do:

-Wear a mask, a face shield or both, depending on the child. We DO NOT want an environment of fear and will do everything to keep the kids seeing our smiling faces.
-Disinfect after every client.
-Maintain social distancing as much as possible.
-Keep the HVAC running. We have HEPA filters and will keep the air circulating.
-Hand wash before and after every client.
-Limited in-person therapy. One family at a time as much as possible. Worst case, is one family per treatment room at a time.
-Staggered schedule so families will not be transitioning in/out at the same time.

As we work toward reopening, we will provide much more specific procedures about what to do when you arrive and how to stay safe while in the clinic setting. We have not yet decided on a reopening date and will make the decision based on the COVID numbers. When we reopen, it will be on a very limited basis with as few people in the clinic as possible. We know how difficult Teletherapy has been for some and that you are ready to return. For families who are doing well with Teletherapy, we ask that you continue, to minimize exposure with our staff.

Thank you everyone for going through this process with us. We appreciate your willingness and compliance in order to keep yourself and others safe.

I want to send out an update on our reopening process:

As you can imagine, our ability to reopen depends on State and County Statutes. At this time, both are requiring that ALL people who enter into the clinic space wear masks. As this is neither safe, nor feasible for the majority of our pediatric population, we are forced to wait to reopen until either:
a) we get an okay from the offices of Kate Brown to allow our kids not to wear masks, OR
b) we enter Phase 2 of reopening.

We also face strict documenting, sanitizing, PPE, signage, social distancing and other requirements that are taking us time to figure out, plan for and meet. Until we can prove that we are meeting all requirements, we cannot reopen.

This is not a simple process and we are working diligently to find a solution and a safe way to reopen so we can continue to serve our pediatric population we love, face to face. I know this is all taking longer than expected, and for that, I am truly sorry. Please know that we are working as quickly as we are able.

Thank you all for your patience while we navigate this unprescedented time.

Dysregulation is often misunderstood with "bad behavior". Kids who are dysregulated struggle to stop and listen because they are in a state of fight or flight. We have to remember to help the child regulate first before reasoning and to not jump right into consequences when they don't listen. It is easy to threaten "if you don't stop, then you will (fill in the blank), when the child is dysregulated and unable to just stop. This behavior is an unintentional side effect of the sensory overload happening in the moment. Once we understand that, we can counter their unwanted behavior with action to calm them down (i.e. "let go outside, how about a big bear hug, let's jump up and down really fast 20x), then we can talk to them about how/why their behavior was not okay.
