Did you know that Trans Fertility Co has an online video library? We know that isolation is one of the most common experiences of trans folks going through fertility journeys, so we set a goal of having every kind of trans fertility story featured in our library. And we’re looking for new stories to tell!

If you’d like other trans people to hear what you experienced so they can learn from what you went through (and feel less alone), please apply to be interviewed for our video library. The library is completely free for any trans person who wants to access it, and it exists behind a password that can only be accessed by emailing us to ask for it (which keeps the trolls out). Each interview lasts an hour, and we’ll edit the conversation down to roughly 15 minutes so people actually watch it.

Fill out an easy application online now (link in bio) if you’d like to be considered! We’d love to share your story with other trans folks on fertility journeys!

Fertility is so tender, especially for trans folks. Many of us freeze up during appointments or medical procedures, forgetting to ask important questions that put us back in the drivers seat. I train doctors to give these answers to trans patients proactively, and want to make sure trans folks know how to get the info you need to make informed, empowered decisions at every stage of your fertility journey.

Transgender women experience disproportionately high levels of infertility even BEFORE starting hormones. That’s why it’s so important to get a fertility workup as early as you can in your process. Delaying transition unnecessarily can be heartbreaking (we hear this story all the time in our DM’s), and a fertility workup is relatively inexpensive and painless.

Put questions about this in the chat, and we’ll respond as we’re able!

Over 40 medical centers serving transgender people under the age of 19 have closed their doors for good. Without being explicitly asked to do so. That’s right… they’re complying in advance.

What does this mean for transgender reproductive rights? Nothing good. These clinics were utilizing the best data we have to support their patients in understanding the fertility implications of transition. Wherever they go next might not have that same awareness and commitment.

Do everything you can to support clinics that are staying open and to fight back against preemptive closures.

What if trans men didn’t have to go off T to do egg harvesting?

Providers everywhere have been working with new protocols that don’t require trans patients to stop T while doing egg harvesting. Now we have a case study outlining this process, so it’s clear that some people might be spared the stress of going off T (and back on again) while doing egg harvesting.

Eggs that are harvested can be used in IVF, where a partner or surrogate carries and gives birth to the baby created using the egg. In this way, both partners (or a partner and a surrogate) get to participate in bringing a baby into the world. Until recently, trans folks had to stop T to collect eggs, but now we’re learning that might not be necessary.

So cool!

Less than 5% of trans people preserve their fertility prior to transition, but nearly 80% wish they had! So the question is: how can we increase access to this medically necessary service?

Early data in California suggests that insurance coverage may make a difference! Referrals for fertility preservation skyrocketed after a bill was passed requiring insurers to cover it. This could be a critical step to providing more reproductive opportunities for trans folks, who are often overlooked in these discussions.

Does pregnancy impact top surgery results?

As with many things in the world of fertility, the “correct” answer is… it’s complicated.

There are only a couple of studies looking at this topic, and they’re both pretty small! But what we do know is that yes, pregnancy can impact the results of your top surgery.

- Regrowth: pregnancy can trigger existing mammary tissue to swell temporarily, ranging from small growth to pre-surgery sizes. This is usually temporary, but if skin stretches a lot (especially if you choose to lactate and nurse your baby, some changes might be permanent.

- Scar tissue and shape of chest changing: Regardless of the type of surgery you had, your scar tissue might move around a bit and get darker, and the general shape of your chest by change as well. As with growth, this can be temporary but some people report these changes as permanent.

What can you do? Well, some people choose to postpone top surgery until they are done with their fertility journeys, so they don’t have to worry about the way pregnancy might change their surgery results. Other people accept the changes as part of the many ways all bodies change as a result of pregnancy. Finally, many people have top surgery revisions after things have settled down postpartum and they’ve stopped producing milk (if that happened for them).

It’s really up to what’s best for you! But we’d love to hear from our community—did you experience growth or other changes during your pregnancy or pregnancies?

One of the most common questions we get is: How can I get help paying for my fertility journey? 💸

Well, good news! The fight for fair insurance coverage just took a huge step forward! 🌟

A recent class-action settlement with Aetna means fertility coverage must now include LGBTQ+ people, no matter their sexual orientation or partner status. This victory challenges outdated definitions of infertility and clears a path for trans people who face similar insurance barriers. 🧬🏳️‍⚧️

We all deserve the chance to build our families, and to have support funding those processes. 💜

Navigating Fertility Decisions: Insights from Transgender Individuals

A brand-new study by J.D. Asseler and colleagues delves into the experiences of trans adults who were sterilized as adolescents during a time when sterilization was legally required for gender recognition in the Netherlands. These interviews shed light on how past fertility decisions impact the present lives of trans individuals as they mature into adulthood.

Key Insights:

- Prioritizing Gender Affirmation: Many participants chose gender-affirming treatments over preserving fertility during adolescence, viewing it as essential for their well-being.

- Barriers Due to Dysphoria: Fertility preservation was often viewed as too emotionally taxing, with procedures like semen cryopreservation exacerbating gender dysphoria.

- Counseling Gaps: While informed about fertility impacts, many felt the discussions lacked depth, leaving them unprepared for future decisions.

- Current Reflections: Most would still choose gender affirmation over fertility preservation, though some wish they had the option to freeze gametes.

- Emotional Impact: Emotions ranged from acceptance to significant distress, highlighting the need for robust support systems.

- Future Family Planning: Despite most participants not wanting children when they transitioned, over half expressed a current desire to be a parent.

This study underscores the importance of comprehensive fertility counseling and support for TGD individuals, ensuring informed decisions that align with their unique needs and future aspirations.

At Trans Fertility Co., we understand that the journey to parenthood for transgender individuals is unique and can come with its own set of challenges. Today, we're sharing an article written by K Surkan, called That Fat Man is Giving Birth: Gender Identity, Reproduction, and the Pregnant Body.

Surkan discusses two different trans pregnancy experiences (you can read our summary and the original article at the link).

Sion, younger and with less hormone exposure, was often misidentified as a le***an during his pregnancy. Stephen, who had top surgery, faced the unique challenge of not always being recognized as the birth parent of his daughter. These experiences highlight the diverse and personal nature of pregnancy for trans men.

One of the hardest parts is the invisibility of masculine pregnancy, making it difficult to find services and navigate gendered spaces. But together, we can break down traditional notions of pregnancy and provide the visibility and support needed.
