What if it's not either/or?
This time of year, we see a growing wave of folks stepping away from the frenzy of overconsumption to embrace Green Friday - a movement rooted in sustainability, mindful choices, and caring for the planet.
Green Friday asks us to rethink what we really need.
To shop less, repair more, and invest in community and climate instead of clutter.
But here’s something just as important:
Not everyone has the privilege to opt out.
For many, Black Friday is a lifeline - a necessary opportunity to afford essentials, stretch a budget, or give their loved ones something special.
And there's no shame in that.
At Mighty Epiphyte, we hold space for both:
– The drive to reduce waste, shop secondhand, and support values-aligned businesses
– And the reality that for some, these sales make all the difference
This isn’t about judgment. It’s about intention.
It’s about recognizing systemic inequities - and choosing, where we can, to align our actions with our values, without creating shame or division.
If you’re celebrating Green Friday this year, here are a few ways to make a gentle impact:
1. Shop small, local, or secondhand to lower your environmental footprint
2. Repair, upcycle, or donate items instead of discarding them
3. Support eco-conscious and equity-centered businesses when possible
And if Black Friday sales help you meet your needs this season, know that your dignity is not up for debate.
However you participate in this weekend, know that every intentional choice contributes to a more just and sustainable future.
What are your reflections this year… on consumerism, values, and access?
Let’s hold the complexity together.
