Shafia Monroe Consulting

Shafia Monroe Consulting Shafia Monroe is the Queen Mother of a midwife movement, a doula trainer, and a birth justice warrior My personal goal is to end human suffering.

I am a lover of people and see the best in each person that I meet. My seven children and my husband are the joys of my life. I've been teaching midwives, doulas, and birth workers for over four decades, focusing on African American birth traditions and postpartum rituals. I am a lifelong learner of organic gardening and herbal medicine. In 2002, I created the SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion Training curriculum, to increase the number of doulas of color, Black midwives, and to honor the legacy of the 20th century African American midwife. It's about bringing joy to birth, sacredness to motherhood, honor to fatherhood, and strengthening family.

Pan fried buttermilk cornbread in a cast iron skillet. Old school cornmeal only, no flour. It is a quick make when in a rush, and it goes well with everything.

Buttermilk is a traditional African American food that helps the postpartum period. In my book,
Mothering the Mother, I explain the amazing benefits . The other day, I sliced up a ripe banana, put it in a cup and pour buttermilk over it. OMG delicious!

Dandelion has great medicinal properties. The entire flower is eatable.
Great to consume as a tonic. I have a dandelion tea recipe in my book,
Mothering the Mother. It takes quite yummy when you add honey. You can drink it plain, too. It’s considered a bitter and helps with digestion. I will rinse and dry these leaves and put them in my salad and eat them.

When my son transitioned, I created a memorial garden in his name. I carved out section on the south side of my yard. He loved my yard. I plant new flowers every spring and tend this area, because it is personal between he and I. There is a bench in front of his memorial garden, so I can sit, smell the flowers, see the beauty, and remember him.

I am grateful to have participated in Ramadan. It is a challenge, not just abstaining from food and drink, but watching my thoughts, being patient, not getting angry, feeding those in need, donating to those in need, and remembering Allah much. And now Ramadan has ended and time for celebration and gift giving.
Eid Mubarak, means recurring happiness and blessings.

Thank you for phonoring Dr. Janell Green Smith, with The Bloom Award, at the Black Midwives Conference. Her husband received her award, in her honor.
His presence reminded me of the huge impact, he lost his wife, his soulmate and the mother of their daughter. Please continue to uplift him and his baby daughter in prayer. We hold the health care system accountable until preventable deaths are no longer.
