We keep hearing the same stories over and over again right now...

"I can't find a prescriber for my psych meds, my P*P won't do it."
"I can't get a callback from any of the 15 therapists I have called."
"I'm not doing ok"

Sadly, it becomes even harder to find access to care when you are on medicaid/OHP. Many specialty providers have opted to no longer accept it, because working with the government can be frustrating.

This makes us feel especially grateful that we can officially say we are open for medicaid patients (CareOregon & Legacy PacificSource medical plans only) to seek holistic primary care & integrative mental health support! *Limited Spots Available*

As you know, our providers schedules will fill up fast and there are not enough providers in our community for all of the mental health needs, but reach out today through our website and we promise someone will be in touch this week to pair you with a provider.

We are truly grateful to announce that we are expanding. Not only have we added acupuncture for mental health *Cheers to Electra Allenton🥳* but also 3 incredible ND's to expand our integrative psychiatry program here at Amenda. Each provider offers a range of interest and specialties and we couldn't be more excited to see our team grow and our community served.

Fight vs Flight vs Freeze - Understanding the different trauma responses

The Fight vs Flight vs Freeze responses are unconscious responses by your body to something scary. For example, if you were chased by a bear, you would respond in one of three ways. You would stop and fight the bear, you would run away, or you would freeze like a deer in the headlights.

Once the threat of the bear is gone, your body can relax in safety. But maybe the next day out of the corner of your eye, you see a shadow that looks like a bear. The bear is gone but your body may still respond like it is still there. Some people may experience this response whenever they see this shadow again, despite the threat of the bear being far away.

The Fight Response:
The goal of the fight response is to try to overpower the threat in order to survive. Your body responds with an automatic physiological response: elevated heart rate, fast breathing, flushed or pale skin, dilated pupils, dry mouth. Your body is preparing you to fight!

Unless you are hiking in the woods somewhere that bears live, you are unlikely to experience this threat! But our body responds to anything scary as if it was threatened by a bear. Your body can’t tell the difference!
Since you’re not actually fighting a bear, what does this response look like? A person experiencing a ‘fight’ trauma response may exhibit some of the following behavior:
*Easily angered
*Easily reactive
*Yelling, slamming doors, screaming, aggression
Taunting, mocking, shaming others
*Ignoring others perspectives
*Talking back to authority figures

This graphic by shows the similarities between PTSD and C-PTSD.

PTSD is caused by a single traumatic event. People with PTSD relive their experience with nightmares and flashbacks, avoid anything that can potentially remind them of the experience, and experience hyperarousal, such as being easily scared or difficulty sleeping.

Complex PTSD or C-PTSD is caused by ongoing and repetitive trauma. People with C-PTSD will experience the same symptoms as PTSD. However, they may also experience difficulty controlling their emotions, a negative self-view, and difficulty with relationships.

According to the Urban Dictionary, the well known definition of the term “triggered” is when someone gets offended or gets their feelings hurt. The term has been used as an insult, as a way of telling someone they are being weak, sensitive, or too easily upset. This trivializes the real symptoms that those with trauma experience when faced with a trigger.

The medical definition of triggered is when someone experiences something that unconsciously triggers an alarm in their body, reminding them of a previous trauma. This causes an intense emotional or physical reaction and can be experienced as a flashback, overwhelming sadness, anxiety or panic, or muscle tension. The person may feel like they are experiencing the event all over again.

Understanding the reality of a trigger for a person who has experienced trauma can help us use the term less nonchalantly.

Trauma is an experience:
Trauma is not what happened to you. Instead, trauma is how your body experienced the event. It is how your body responded to and interpreted it. Two people can experience the same event in different ways. The same event can be more traumatic for some people than others.

Trauma has an effect:
Trauma can be caused by any event that causes your body to experience it as emotionally harmful or life-threatening. It affects your mental, physical, social, and spiritual well-being.

We strive to be trauma informed at Amenda Clinic. Check out the link in our bio to learn more.
