We know there are plenty of training options out there so, if you don’t mind :), we wanted to run through a few reasons why to choose PYP’s Barre Teacher Training…

1. PYP’s Barre Training was born years ago, in 2016, by PYP co-founder/owner, Elizabeth April, even before PYP existed as a brick & mortar. Since then we have refined this tried and true program - it is effective, fun, accessible, and maybe most importantly, not a trend. PYP Barre is here to stay.

2. You can take this training almost anywhere! We don’t ask you to sign a non-compete nor do we believe we “own” any movements that we teach you. We have had trainees go open their own studios, teach at other local studios, etc… We support your growth as a teacher.

3. Tenured, passionate, and creative facilitators. Elizabeth, Jess, Dr. Brooke, & Stephen collectively bring over 30 years of barre teaching experience & even more when you count in the many other movement modalities they teach. Their experience is robust & multifaceted. Bonus: Brooke is a doctor of physical therapy - which elevates this program even more.

4. You don’t want to teach? No problem. This training can also support you digging deeper into own barre practice. A huge amount of empowerment is developed when you understand how to move your body effectively and intelligently.

5. We have fun. A lot of fun. We take movement seriously but we also love to have fun. Expect to laugh, connect, & move a ton in this training.

ACTION EVENT WITH THROUGH THESE DOORS

Next Friday - Jan 16 - 5:30pm-6:45pm

PYP DOWNTOWN

This January, join Victoria and Mary from through these doors as we host another action event at our downtown location. When the social services experience dramatic reductions in funding both nationally and here in Maine, domestic violence and interpartner violence rise as well. It is now more important than ever that we have the skills to recognize coercive and abusive dynamics and prepare ourselves to be safe community members when we are called on for support.

At this event, we will come up with a working definition of what we mean when we talk about DV, highlight the resources and work that Through These Doors offers to members of the Cumberland County Community, and role play how to receive and support someone that discloses to you. We will end our session by writing post cards that will be distributed directly to survivors of violence. As always, we will weave in moments of reflection and movement as we hold the heaviness of this topic together.

This event is FREE and open to ALL! Please register below so we can know how many to expect!

Friday, January 23 | 5:30pm-7pm
PYP DOWNTOWN

In the darker winter months it is important to rest and nourish ourselves from within. Join Alex Argo for a healing practice designed to support the immune system, promote seasonal balance, and cultivate inner warmth and resilience. In this gentle, grounding practice, students will be guided through long-held Yin postures to open the deeper layers of fascia, targeting the lymphatic, respiratory and digestive systems in the gross and subtle body. The practice will end with a series of supported Restorative poses to encourage deep relaxation and nervous system support.

Happy FIRST Birthday PYP DOWNTOWN!!
🎉🎂🥳

Watching this community grow the last year has been such a treat. Downtown, you were ready for us and welcomed us with open arms.

In the last year, PYP Downtown had almost 20k visits - our schedule has grown by almost 50% - hosted many workshops, trainings - & have had so many laughs, breakthroughs, and even have thrown some amazing dance parties.

To our teachers and staff. Thank. You!!! You are what makes this space (and PYP as a whole) what it is.

To our students. God damn, thank you for continuing to show up. The connections, growth, and commitment we get to watch every day is truly a blessing.

We are beyond lucky.

To many more years sweating, laughing, resting, & connecting together ❤️❤️❤️

📢 PYP’s Human Resources Manager 📢

Last month, Jamie added HR Manager to their roles here at PYP. While most of their work is directly connected to our staff, we wanted to publicly welcome Jamie to this role. They bring decades of experience in the HR world and we are incredibly lucky to be able to have them on our team in this capacity now.

Make sure you give them a little congrats next time you see them at the studios 🤍🤍🤍

🌟🌟🌟 These teachers!!! 🌟🌟🌟

In 2025 they…

🌟helped birth PYP Downtown - our second location & our third buildout since 2018
🌟taught over 4,400 classes
🌟led over 4,700 visits to the studios

And every single time they show up with passion, laughter, humility, and so much care for their work and their students.

With over 40 teachers on staff, it is an understatement to say we are lucky. Our teachers are what make this all possible and have set the bar high to say the least.

Yoga & Barre Retreat to Spain! 2 Spots Left!

Meet your co-leaders…

Kelley Voegelin
Kelley (she/her) began teaching yoga classes in Brooklyn, NY in 2011. Over the years, she’s come to offer multiple forms of this practice—Vinyasa, Prenatal, Yin, Gentle, and Restorative.

Her vinyasa style classes combine clear postural alignment with digestible, breath-centered pacing. Each fluid sequence strikes a balance of movement and stillness. In Yin, her approach is meditative and supportive of options, spaciousness and quietude. Kelley is also inspired by breathwork, mudra and meditation. She believes a yoga practice evolves for each person over a lifetime. She aims to always offer choice, tools, and balance of body, breath, and mind in her classes.

In addition to yoga, Kelley also teaches PYP Barre. She believes a barre practice can maintain and further one’s strength, stability and body awareness. While she is known for her grounding and quiet presence in yoga classes, her barre class is where she shows her lighter, sillier and louder side.

Jess Emilfarb
Jess (she/her) is co-owner and co-founder of The Portland Yoga Project with Elizabeth April. In 2011 she made the jump into teaching yoga after completing her Master’s in Occupational Therapy at Boston University. While not the most financially savvy life-choice, she loves integrating her knowledge of anatomy with her love of functional movement to create an experience that is chock full of new and interesting perspectives. Jess never intended to open a yoga studio, but after completing a barre teacher training with Elizabeth April she was compelled by their shared vision for a studio that values education, community, and social justice.

Jess teaches barre and yoga classes and teacher trainings that are based in curiosity and specificity rather than aesthetics and competition. Although she takes her work seriously, Jess brings a grounding silliness to every class. She wants her students to walk away from every class feeling cared for and safe in body and mind and believes that strength and intention can create more space for joy and humor.
