Fresh one! đź’›

We wait until after the Golden Hour of sweet bonding to weigh, measure and do a head to toe newborn exam. Most newborns lose up to 10% from their birth weight in the first week of life and then return to birth weight by 2 weeks. We keep a close eye on their weight on day one, day three, 2,4 and 6 weeks. Baby’s gain on their own trajectory!

Children who are included in the prenatal journey often form such a special bond with their new sibling đź’›

At Alma, we welcome (healthy) kids into the clinic because this is their experience too. From listening in on baby’s heartbeat to flipping through our sibling preparation books, it becomes something they get to be part of, not just hear about later.

We even have a small lending library to help families prepare together!

Umbilical cords are magic! ✨

They are covered by a protective substance called Wharton’s Jelly which acts both as a cushion and a shock absorber in order to protect the precious blood vessels that run within the cord.

This busy little one managed to tie up a knot in his cord, but despite that, was born without complication at the birth center- healthy and crying!

Ever wondered how midwifery care supports freedom of movement during labor?

That’s where the handheld Doppler comes in. Using intermittent fetal monitoring, midwives can check in on your baby’s heartbeat without limiting how you move. You’re free to labor in the positions your body asks for — standing, swaying, hands and knees, or in the tub — and we follow you there.

We listen in at regular intervals (typically every 15–30 minutes, and more frequently during pushing) to support both safety and autonomy throughout labor.

Curious to learn more about intermittent vs continuous fetal heartbeat monitoring?

Poppy! 🌺The second baby of the New Year arrived minutes after the first baby. Her Mama rocked her out in the Lilly Room into her Father’s hands, with Grandma near by for support. It’s a happy day at Alma when two souls decide to enter back to back to bless the New Year!
