The MHBBC school program held their annual book fair coinciding with the nearing end of the '25-'26 school-year. 📚 Students/patients and their families selected from a wide variety of free books generously donated by local authors and publishers, including McSea Books, Down East Books, and Maine Authors Publishing.

Medical providers were offered literacy resources and research that shows that there is a correlation between a child's literacy and their long-term health outcomes. The theme of the book fair was "Literacy as a Social Determinant of Long-Term Wellness." 💙

A heartfelt thank-you to Maine children’s book author Kayla James Author for joining the celebration and sharing your creativity and talents with our community. 📖

And a very special shout-out to our Hospital Teacher, Tim, for organizing and leading this truly remarkable book fair. 👏

‘HoloBaby’ became a reality thanks to generous community donations - just like the support YOU are providing during our annual Cares For Kids Radiothon.

“Zip code should not determine outcome” declares Dr. Michael Ferguson with MaineHealth Pediatric Critical Care. Some rural hospitals in Maine only see one baby born a day (or less). And while it’s good news that only about 2% of newborns require resuscitation or intubation, it means that doctors and care teams at rural hospitals have less opportunity to maintain these lifesaving skills.

To support rural hospitals in practicing critical resuscitation skills, Drs. Ferguson and Ottolini worked with the MaineHealth Innovation Center to develop ‘HoloBaby’ simulation training. Providers can practice resuscitation skills and train in their real-life hospital setting. Wearing a special pair of goggles (similar to virtual reality headsets), clinical staff train on a realistic infant hologram projected onto a training manikin.

Minutes, even seconds, are vital when administering resuscitation. ‘HoloBaby’ equipment allows care teams to regularly practice resuscitation by simulation, so that they are ready should the need arise.
