Today was our first day of our fall Trail Buddies session. We stopped at the edge of the woods and took a moment to notice how we felt: Excited! Adventurous! Happy!
All I know, it felt so good to be back with these people, on these trails, in the September afternoon sun.

Trail Buddies Prep:

This time around, fall session was sold out before I could even advertise 🤯 T-minus two weeks to our first day of fort building, garland making, sit spots, and setting intentions in our hope box.

Currently taking inventory on what can be reused from our muddy spring session as I get us ready for the fall. Hats have been ordered and I’m starting to get those first day butterflies.

Today, one of our first grader led us out farther than we had ever gone. There was a trust and respect for the land and each other that just felt so honest and real. We picked up a lot of trash and cheered each other on, pushing our limits. The original purpose of Trail Buddies was to connect with self, the land, create community, and slow down to watch the forest wake up. With one more week to go, I can confidently say we achieved our goals ❤️

What if instead of waiting until the end, we said thank you right when we felt it in our hearts? A little reminder from one of our Trail Buddies kindergarteners that the perfect time to show gratitude is right now.

Trail buddies, week one was a huge success. Our goal this week was creating community and wow, did we bond. After a welcome circle, we talked about how our ground rules are to be kind to ourselves, each other, and nature. When I pulled out our gear bag and asked if anyone wanted to help carry our supplies out to “home base”, they eagerly lined up, ready to be a part of the team.

Hiking, singing, and getting muddy on the way, we made it to home base and moved in. Hammocks were hung, paracord was cut, trees were climbed, and logs were flipped. After we had a sit spot to slow it down, a huge roll of thunder boomed and the rain arrived. Everyone threw on their rain gear, helped pack up quick, and we hustled out to the safety of parent pickup right as the sky opened up.

And here’s the thing, I have found in life that we connect through joy and hardship. We are all just acquaintances until we feel that roll of thunder of light or darkness at the same moment. And so, with a little help from Mother Nature, our goal of community was achieved.

We had ourselves a time and I can’t wait for week two.

Yesterday, we made nature crowns. After the kids collected leaves, ferns, and moss, they stuck them to strips of paper, adding paper flowers and gems. When they were ready, they came to me for their crown fitting. I did it 100 times, stapling paper together to make a circle.

Once the fitting was complete, I asked them to bow so I could place the crown upon their head. In my best royal voice, I boomed, “Your majesty, please rise.”Something changed in their eyes in that moment. They were transformed to kings and queens, the woods their royal kingdom.

And maybe, just maybe, this was the day that they realized it was their royal responsibility to protect this land.

Yesterday, we spent the morning with first graders slowing our breath down around the fire and then moving slow to watch for the quiet signs of spring. We found daffodils poking through the ground, a wooly bear hiding in the grass, and made best friends with a beetle.

There’s a change in the air. Can you feel it?
