Keith Edward Payton

January 1, 1957 - March 18, 2026

Portsmouth Resident

F. C. Daehler Mortuary

Keith Edward Payton, 69, of Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away surrounded by family and friends who loved him.

Keith was raised by his father, Joe Payton, and his adopted mother, Dorothy Conklin (Payton), who taught him the value of hard work, kindness, and simply enjoying the little things in life. He was a 1975 graduate of Minford High School, and he carried the pride of being a Falcon with him throughout his life.

Keith spent many years working and truly enjoyed the opportunities his job gave him to travel and see many great places. He loved sharing stories from the road and talking about the people he met and the sights he was able to experience along the way.

At home, Keith was happiest in the simple moments: sitting on the porch, watching his favorite westerns, and cheering on college football. He adored his dogs and treated them as part of the family. Keith was very much a “go with the flow” kind of guy, easy going and steady, and people naturally felt comfortable around him.

For 36 years, Keith shared his life with his significant other, Kathleen "Kathy" Lavey, who was his constant companion and best friend. Their bond was one of deep loyalty and quiet, everyday love.

Keith is survived by his daughter, Tara Payton of Muscatine, Iowa; his three grandchildren, Zoe, Ashlynn, and Caden, who brought tremendous joy and pride to his life; his three sisters, LeeAnn Scherer of New Boston, Ohio, Jolynn (David) Craft of New Boston, Ohio, and Judith Steinmentz of San Jose, California; and Wilma Mowery of South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Dorothy Conklin (Payton), and his daughter, Kendra Payton.

Keith will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his love for his family, his easygoing nature, and the way he enjoyed life in his own quiet way. His memory will live on in the stories shared on front porches, the sound of a football game in the background, and the unconditional love of a loyal dog at someone’s feet.

Please visit www.fcdaehlermortuary.com to leave a special memory of Keith or condolences for his family.
