Edmarc Unlike adult hospice, where life-saving treatment ceases and the end is certain, Edmarc offers hope. The minister's name was Edward; the boy's name was Marcus.

Established in 1978, Edmarc was the first hospice in the nation designed specifically for children. Edmarc is the only pediatric hospice organization in Hampton Roads. Edmarc was founded by the members of Suffolk Presbyterian Church in Suffolk, Virginia, along with their minister who was dying of cancer, and a young couple whose only son was dying of a progressive neuromuscular disease. The agency is named in their memory. In 1982, Edmarc Hospice for Children received a $300,000 grant from the Birthday Offering of the Presbyterian Women. This generous community gift funded the development and expansion of our hospice, home health care, and bereavement support services. Edmarc now serves a wide geographic area that includes the Virginia Peninsula and all of southside Hampton Roads.

🐰Edmarc’s Spring Fling was a hippity hoppity time!

🐣An Easter egg hunt, piñatas, games, glitter tattoos, and an appearance by our mascot Wags and the Easter Bunny himself made for such a special day! So grateful to the Kiwanis Club of Norfolk for sponsoring such a memorable event and the Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalist church for hosting us.

💜When a child dies, they are not forgotten. Keeping their child's memory alive becomes a way many parents find comfort in their grief journey. This is where Edmarc social workers step in, helping parents and other loved ones create tangible pieces they can literally hold onto when that grief hits a little harder.

💙Check out our latest blog, "Intertwining Hearts: A Lasting Connection of Love", and learn about one such symbol that represents the everlasting bond parents share with their child.

When a child dies, loved ones find comfort in the cherished memories they shared. The Legacy Boxes that Edmarc provides serve as a place to hold these memories, safekeeping pictures, handprints, stuffed hearts, and a myriad of other keepsakes.

Be a part of helping families cherish their child's memory by donating these boxes in various colors. Because you're not just donating a box...you're giving a family something to hold on to as they walk through one of the most difficult journeys imaginable.

💜Happy National Social Work Month!

💛We are so grateful for Edmarc's amazing team of social workers and the love they show to our families. Though Edmarc initially enters a family's life because of their child's clinical needs, there is so much more Edmarc provides so families receive complete, holistic care. Katy, Megan, Monique, and Philip ensure each family has what they need from counseling and sibling support to financial and social resources to legacy building and memory making. They are also there to walk with expecting parents as they navigate the uncertainty of their child's birth through our Bridges of Hope perinatal program. The comfort and expertise they provide to families is incomparable, easing the stress and strain that can come with caring for a child with a medically complex illness.

💚Thank you, Katy, Megan, Monique, and Philip, for the unwavering support and unconditional compassion you share with our families!

So grateful for our friends at the Ability Center of Virginia! They helped get our Mother’s Day card project going by cutting, crafting, and constructing cards with love.

Edmarc will be mailing over 350 of these cards to bereaved moms of Edmarc kids, a feat that would NOT be possible without volunteer support. If you’d like to help with projects like this or anything else in the future, please reach out to Brittany at boylanb@edmarc.org to join our next Volunteer Orientation!

And if you’d like to help with this project by purchasing supplies, please check out our previous post for more information.

Wishlist Wednesday!

💜Help send a little love to bereaved mothers this Mother's Day. Donate remaining supplies off our wish list so our volunteers can lovingly craft and mail these sweet cards.

📬Every bereaved mom, no matter how long ago her child died, receives a Mother's Day card from Edmarc if they wish. This simple yet powerful gesture helps remind moms they should never have to walk their journey alone. They have a village ready and willing to lend support when and how they need it.

❤Because a mom never stops being a mom - even if that means being a mother through grief.

💜If you’re looking for a picture of selfless love, look no further than the caregivers of Edmarc patients. Each and every day, these parents, grandparents, family members, and family friends revolve their lives around the care and needs of these precious children. The plans many of them made for the future have turned into the needs of the now, altering how they view life and what they hold truly important. Their sacrificial service is not performed for accolades but simply because it’s what needs to be done - all because the love they have for their children is endless.

💜This National Caregivers Day, we stand in awe of the families that endure through the struggles and rejoice in the wins. They know that hope is hard, especially when facing uncertainty, but choose to carry on because they are doing so guided by the unending love they hold for their child.
