On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we reflect on the work still ahead — and recommit to building a more equitable economy.

At ECDI, we expand opportunity through access to capital, training, and trusted support — especially for entrepreneurs who have historically been left out of traditional systems.

Cycle breakers are often doing two jobs at once:
grieving what they didn’t receive and building something new from the ground up.

You’re learning boundaries without having been shown.
You’re practicing regulation in a body that learned survival first.
You’re choosing repair where silence once lived.
This work is exhausting, and it is sacred.

Even when it feels invisible, it matters.
Even when you’re unsure, it’s still enough.
What you’re changing won’t always be named, but it will be felt.

This is how patterns end. This is how safety begins.

Four Christmases ago, this business was merely a desire for change.

Three Christmases ago, I (Ali) was leaving my full-time corporate salary job with full benefits.

Two Christmases ago, the licensure exam for massage therapy was passed and graduation from CSMM was weeks away.

One Christmas ago, Align Massage Therapy was nearly a year old and expanding to Sixth Street.

This Christmas, Makenzie has her own consulting business and our family lives in Portsmouth, within the community we have always wanted.

Little by little, with support and encouragement, we are finding our way. Closer together and more connected with our community.

That’s magic. That’s Believing.

We all deserve the chance to find our way and be with each other through it all. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our family to yours 🫶🏼🎄❄️
