A few years back, we were honored to be voted Outstanding Funeral Home by SFLIC. For those who don’t know, SFLIC is a long-standing insurance company that partners with funeral homes across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma to support pre-need and final expense planning.

And yes, that recognition meant a lot to us and it still does. It’s encouraging to be recognized by professionals in the industry.

But here’s the honest question…Does that really matter to families?

When someone you love passes away, you’re probably not thinking about awards.

You’re wondering:
Will my loved one stay here locally?
Are real people I know going to be caring for them?
Can I trust this funeral home to handle everything with dignity?

That’s what truly matters. Awards are nice. But personal service, longevity, and keeping your loved one in local care- that’s what builds real trust.

We’re proud of the recognition. But we’re even prouder to serve families the old-fashioned way, with compassion, consistency, and commitment right here at home.

So what does a funeral director really do? A lot more than most people realize.

A funeral director meets with families when a death occurs, helps plan the service, handles paperwork like death certificates and permits, coordinates the service, works with cemeteries, clergy, musicians, and makes sure everything runs smoothly. Behind the scenes, they’re also overseeing preparation, transportation, and dozens of small details families shouldn’t have to worry about.

We’re proud of our funeral director assistants, Phil and Melissa, who assist with many of these duties. They’re steady, kind, and committed to walking families through one of the hardest times in their lives.

It’s not just organizing a service , it’s helping people say goodbye with care, dignity, and support.

Wow- 1897- the year Evans was founded. We’re really proud of that. But does it really matter? That kind of longevity says something about commitment and consistency, yes.

BUT we also know something else...most families today aren’t choosing a funeral home because it’s old and established. They’re choosing based on what we can actually do for them right now.

Families want to know:
Will my loved one stay here, in local care?
Are real, local people going to be serving us?
Can I trust you in one of the hardest moments of my life?

Being around since 1897 matters. But what matters even more is how we show up today, with modern facilities, full-service care within our funeral home family, and a team that lives right here in this community.

History is important.
But how we care for you today? That’s what really counts. And we're proud to do it well!

Did you know? We have a separate area just for family during services.

It’s a quiet, comfortable, semi-private space meant for the family to gather and take in the service together away from the crowd. Sometimes our families need a little room for just each other and that’s exactly why it’s there.

Come in anytime for a tour- just ask for Melissa!

It’s just one of those thoughtful touches we’ve added over the years to make a hard day feel a little more manageable.

We’re so proud of our very own Melissa Roberts, who recently earned her certification as a Funeral Director Assistant.

This is a big accomplishment, and it reflects her dedication to serving families with care and professionalism. From meeting with families to helping arrange services and supporting the team behind the scenes, this new role allows Melissa to continue serving our community in an even greater way.

We’re grateful for her heart, her hard work, and the way she shows up for families every single day.

“What does ‘local ownership’ really mean?”

This is a question worth slowing down and thinking about, because “local” can mean very different things these days.

The funeral industry has changed a lot over the last 30 years. One of the biggest changes has been large, outside corporations buying funeral homes while keeping a familiar local name on the sign. From the outside, it can look the same, but behind the scenes, the commitment can be very different.

To us, local ownership means the old-school way of doing things:

Owners who have their own financial skin in the game

Owners who invest in local employees, not temporary labor

Owners who update facilities, equipment, and vehicles instead of outsourcing care

Owners who think in decades, not quarterly reports

Our family of owners has done it this way for generations, right here in southeastern Oklahoma, and this location has been operated with that same mindset for over 100 years. Long before it was convenient or profitable, committed funeral homes hired local people, built full-service facilities, and made sure families always knew where their loved one was and who was caring for them.

Being truly local isn’t about geography alone, it’s about commitment, continuity, and accountability. It’s about showing up year after year, investing in the same community, and planning to still be here long after today.

That old-school approach isn’t outdated to us. It’s how trust is built, and how it’s kept.
