To Our Community,

We would like to take a moment to sincerely apologize for the tone and content of a recent public statement we released regarding the conclusion of our service contract with Marshall County.

The original post, titled “Forced Out After 51 Years of Service,” was written during a time of deep frustration, sadness, and emotion. For over five decades, Potts Camp Volunteer Fire Department has been proud to serve this community. That pride, mixed with disappointment and a lack of clear communication surrounding recent decisions, led us to share our thoughts in a way that was not reflective of the full picture.

In hindsight, some of the information we shared was not completely accurate or fully informed. While we stand by our record of service, we now recognize that our words may have unintentionally misrepresented others involved and created division within our community.

We acted out of emotion—and while that emotion came from a place of dedication and commitment to our neighbors—it clouded our judgment in how we chose to voice our concerns. For that, we are truly sorry.

We want to extend our gratitude to the Marshall County Board of Supervisors, the Town of Potts Camp, and the members of the new Potts Camp Fire and Rescue. We know that everyone involved ultimately wants what’s best for the safety and well-being of our residents, even if we may not have agreed with how those decisions came about.

To our community: thank you for standing by us over the years. Your support has meant more than words can say. Though this chapter is closing, we are proud of the legacy we’ve built together—and we hope our service has made a lasting, positive impact.

With respect and humility,
Potts Camp Volunteer Fire Department

Forced Out After 51 Years of Service

After 51 years of loyal service to our community, Potts Camp Volunteer Fire Department is being forced to step away—not by choice, but by the very county we’ve served faithfully for decades.

The Marshall County Board of Supervisors has made the decision not to renew our contract, despite our long-standing record, our certified and trained members, and our unwavering dedication to answering calls whenever our community needed us.

Not only have we lacked the support we deserved over the years—we’ve been pushed around, overlooked, and treated as if our service didn’t matter. And now, to add insult to injury, the county has asked us to remove our belongings from their building and return what little equipment they ever provided us.

They’ve chosen to hand over protection of this area to a department with only a few members—just one of whom is certified. The area is now protected by the newly formed Potts Camp Fire and Rescue, a department created by the town’s attorney, Shirley Byers—who also happens to be a city employee of Potts Camp.

Even after the contract was taken away, Potts Camp Volunteer Fire Department continued responding to calls—because that’s what we’ve always done. We didn’t stop serving just because the county turned its back on us. We kept going for the sake of the people.

But now, we’re being made to leave. As of today, we will no longer be responding to any emergency calls. The county is forcing us to remove our equipment and vacate the premises.

This is not how you treat a department that has poured heart, sweat, and decades of time into protecting lives. We are stepping away not because we want to—but because we are being pushed out by political games, backroom decisions, and personal agendas.

To the people of this community: thank you for your trust and support. You’ve always been our reason for doing this, and we are proud of the work we’ve done. We hope you’ll remember who truly stood by you when it mattered most.

April is Volunteer Firefighter month!
This month, we honor the brave men and women who serve our communities not for a paycheck, but out of pure dedication and heart. Volunteer firefighters are the quiet heroes who answer the call at all hours, balancing everyday life with extraordinary service.
Volunteer firefighters are essential for fire and emergency services, providing critical support across the country. They respond to a wide range of emergencies, including fires, medical incidents, accidents, and more. Many departments are actively recruiting volunteers and encourage individuals to consider joining the ranks.
Thank you for your courage, your selflessness, and your commitment. You may not wear a cape, but you carry strength, compassion, and resilience into every call.
Let’s take a moment to show our gratitude to those who protect us without ever asking for anything in return.
To all volunteer firefighters

Please be safe and stay close to your shelters. Please don’t be out unless it’s an emergency. Your local fire department is prepared, and will be assisting, if necessary.

I repeat, please stay close to your tornado safe shelters. There is a chance for significant tornadoes in our area. If it is an emergency please dial 9-1-1.

Have you ever wondered why Firefighters are dispatched when you call for an ambulance?
The answer is that a Firefighter provides care before the ambulance arrives on scene and also provides additional help to the paramedics and EMTs on the scene. This extra manpower enhances support on the scene, whether it’s assisting in the back of the ambulance, helping move a patient, or securing them for transport. There are medical classes for Firefighters to make sure they are educated on how to offer basic medical assistance to EMS. They are known as EMRs, Emergency First Responders. Together we try to provide the best pre-hospital care.
