Winter is the time when this is most apparent.
We slide through October and November, nibbling on things we normally say 'no' to, as well as see a decline in our fitness regimens. This, combined with lack of movement and poor sleep can create the scenario where expanding waistlines become all the norm.

To combat this, I challenge you to think of what you did in the Spring to get yourself in shape, and start that process earlier, so that you can slow down weight gain and focus on what matters most to you, come the spring.

What are four easy ways to take care of your body during the winter?

Hydrate - especially to keep from getting cracked skin on our fingers, which can create infection, not to mention soreness.

Fitness - helps retain our muscle mass, keep body fat accumulation at bay and keeps joints supple.

Food - what we put into our bodies matters. Good food in = good output. Garbage in = garbage out.

Sleep - get after it! 8 hours is a standard many of us fall short of, but it aids in the health and repair as well as regrowth of tissues in need of repair. Sleep is the force-multiplier from which the other three rely upon.

As winter drags on, continue to keep up with your fitness regimen.
It keeps muscles strong and supple, as well as joints lubricated and reduces them stiffening up.
Not only that, but it helps with weight management, meaning, you can start off slimmer by the time we hit Spring.

There are many things I enjoy about my job and the work that I do.

In particular, I am always learning - and this knowledge gets passed down to my patient population in the form of revised protocols and upgraded exercise protocol handouts.

I continue to get excited when my patients have their 'a-ha' moments and something profound finally connects.

Finally, I try to educate you in a way through analogies or concepts - that they stick better with you, as opposed to 'do this and that's'

It is important to know the difference.

When you cross one threshold into the other, that is likely when you want to outsource your pain - especially if it is not getting any better on its own.

Sometimes, doing things that have worked for us in the past will still be effective. If they are not, you might want to consider a different treatment regimen.

I find that a lot of my regular fitness folks who also have jobs where they sit for long periods of time, also have increased incidences of lower back pain.

While it is admirable that you exercise, if you have a job that is sedentary, you will develop stiffness into your hips, weakness in your core, and increased incidence of lower back pain and discomfort.

Take frequent breaks from sitting to help offset this and work on adding a good stretching routine to your hips.

Both reference the fact that you have a tendon-related concern.

"-itis" are usually acute

"-osis" are usually chronic in nature.

Regardless of the diagnosis, if you are constantly injuring and re-injuring yourself, you might want to pull back and examine things like: time of day, frequency, increased work tasks, too much time off, flue occurrences , etc.

By doing this, you set yourself up for better outcomes in future so that they occur less often, or can be avoided altogether.

Shoes look cool, but they can sometimes come with costs we are not willing to inherit.

Shoes desensitize our feet to the environments we find ourselves walking on. Sometimes this can lead to ankle of foot pain, or even knee and hip pain. By taking care of our feet - going barefoot - or at least in socks as often as you are able, as well as choosing shoes that are sensible and match your biomechanics (high arch, low arch, etc.) you will set yourself up for positive success in future.
