Don't you just LOVE this word?!

It can define so many aspects of our life when things just 'don't feel right'.

That said, your ability to adapt and overcome whatever stress in your life can, and will improve.

You just need to be clear about what the suspected causes of your stress are; a tentative timeline as to when said stressor may alleviate (i.e. a stressful trip to visit family / important work meeting); and also, don't forget to utilize the skills that you know CAN help to alleviate / keep your stress at bay.

Every body is different and everybody is different. Also, you can come in with conditions that differ from visit to visit, because - hey, that's how life works sometimes.

That said, every visit is a new opportunity to discuss changes in your health history so that we may continue to best-serve your body's needs on a visit-to-visit basis.

In my practice, my most successful patients are the ones who are dedicated to helping themselves. Just like you run your family finances, you know how much money comes in and goes out every week and every month.
Poor planning equals bills and unnecessary expenses.
With the human body, it is not much different. You need to have a 'pulse' on what is going on. If you don't, you need to outsource that part of your health to someone (like Dr. Erik!) who can help demystify what is going on, help provide you with potential solutions, and give you an expected timeline of when things can start to begin to change.

We all love us some good cardio, right?

Nothing wrong with it, but you should diversify your fitness portfolio. Just the same if you are cross-training. You need balance between your tissues. Cardio, strength training, stretching, calisthenics , plyometrics. They all have value, but need to be sequenced just right to allow for optimal recovery and future participation.

Nobody wants to be derailed by an injury, so why would you continue to work out and get more sore, more injured and more resentful in the process?

Remember, always pull back and ask yourself why you are doing what you are doing. If you are happy, healthy and are remaining injury-free, you likely have found the sweet spot for your body in that moment. But, expect that to change as the seasons change - we all do different things during the year, and your training - AND RECOVERY - should reflect that.

One of my favorite things when working with my patients it to make sure you understand what is going on during each and every session.
When I explain things about your body, I often use analogies that are tailored to you, your job, your lifestyle or your interests. I do this because you have a direct knowledge base about the things you are interested in. And, when I can illuminate you about your body in terms YOU UNDERSTAND, it allows you to digest the material more quickly as well as ask follow-up questions.

This is excellent because it tells me you are hearing it, digesting it, and interpreting it.

While technology is not going away anytime soon, our ability to hold it at arms length can.

Fitness supersedes technology when it comes to moving our bodies. Get up, move around, play a game, run a mile, jog, lift a weight, laugh - it all counts and doesn't need to include our phone being glued into one of our hands.

It will still be there after you exercise, I assure you. Enjoy the moment!

Hey, you!
On your phone - shoulders back, head up and arms up to hold that phone at eye-level, just like we talked about in the office. Your upper back and neck will thank you!

Not all probiotics are created equal.
We have an upper GI tract, as well as a lower GI tract. Each specializes in digestion and absorption (upper) as well as waste consolidation and removal (lower). That said, we need a diverse array of bacteria in our guts so that we can keep that entire tube running smooth and steady.

Failure to to take care of our gut flora can create bacterial overgrowth in certain areas, digestive concerns (i.e. constipation or diarrhea), bloating, etc.

This is why you should swap out your probiotics occasionally to give your body a break. Switching between 1-2 varieties is never a bad idea and allows your body to reset where it needs to. The body is smart and resilient, but sometimes it needs a little help from us.

Hey, it is that time of year.

But don't sacrifice those hard-earned gains from the Spring, Summer and Fall by tossing it in for a few cookies and a pie. Keep your fitness regimen going strong. Build in 'cheat days' around your exercise and be aware of portions during the holidays.

By doing this, you help to streamline your health goals going into next Spring--meaning you have less hard work to do to carve off those extra holidays pounds.

Water!
That thing we all forget to drink during the holidays!
Staying hydrated not only reduces hangovers, but it keeps your cells hydrated, which can reduce the risk of cracked and dry skin. It also helps promote organ health, blood viscosity, muscle suppleness and a whole host of other processes that goes above many of our heads.

The bottom line: most of us stop paying attention to our health during this time of year. I get it. But if you remember one thing, remember this: water for the win.

Often, people are disconnected between the exercise they do, and the type of pain they experience.
You have to remember, that your 1 hour of exercise can be nullified by the type of job you work. A CrossFitter who sits at a desk all day is literally doing two things that oppose each other.

This is why I advocate for recovery exercises that SUPPORT your job - you know, that 8-hour thing you do, each day.

When you do this, you are priming the muscles that support your job, which can, over time, reduce the incidence of discomfort, pain, loss of range of motion, etc.

It just makes good sense.
