For many breast cancer survivors, the journey doesn't end when the surgery is over. Because of lymph node removal and radiation, the body’s "drainage system" can become compromised. This leads to Lymphedema—a chronic swelling that most commonly affects the arm, chest, or hand.

Early detection is the key to managing lymphedema. Watch for subtle signs like a "heavy" feeling in your arm or chest, jewelry that suddenly feels snug, or changes in skin texture.

One size does not fit all. Understanding the different types of mastectomy is essential for tailoring your Treatment Plan to your unique medical needs, reconstruction goals, and personal comfort.

It can be helpful to bring someone to your appointments as a neutral observer to ensure that all questions are asked and that answers are recorded. Being informed and able to make the right decision for your journey is important and can help alleviate some of the stressors that inevitably accompany it.

A few reminders about your mindset through recovery...

💕Healing is Not Linear: Psychological recovery often takes much longer than physical healing. It is normal to feel a mix of relief, grief, and uncertainty even after a successful procedure.
💕Optimism Affects Comfort: Higher levels of optimism are scientifically linked to Lower Perceived Pain and fatigue post-surgery. While "forced positivity" isn't helpful, a realistic, hopeful outlook can significantly improve your overall quality of life.
💕Body Esteem Impacts Hope: Valuing your physical self—even as it changes—directly influences your Mental Health and 💕Hope for the future. Positive body image resilience helps prevent the development of negative self-esteem.
💕Coping Strategies Reduce Distress: Adopting "approach-oriented" strategies, such as Proactive Planning and seeking emotional support before surgery, is associated with a significant reduction in post-operative distress.
💕Social Connection is a Buffer: Social support acts as a "safety net," helping to manage the Fear of Recurrence and feelings of isolation that often surface once active treatment ends.

February 3rd, Congress passed the FY26 federal budget, including key funding wins for critical breast cancer research and safety net programs.

For over a year, has been strong and unified in defending lifesaving programs from devastating cuts. In a huge victory for the breast cancer community, Congress not only rejected proposed cuts but also increased funding for these programs.

Advocates from across the nation, this victory belongs to YOU, and we thank you. With these federal investments, we are working closer to a world where no one dies of breast cancer. On February 3rd, Congress passed the FY26 federal budget, which includes key funding wins for critical breast cancer research and safety net programs.
