It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Stan Kodrin yesterday in Euclid, Ohio. Stan was 69 years old. Stan had over the past few years a number of health-related concerns and was most recently under hospice care with the great support of his brother, Sylvester "Sly."

Stan was born in May 1955 as the son of the late Stanislav and late Karoline "Dragica" (nee Izak) Kodrin. The family resided in the St. Clair Avenue neighborhood off East 73rd Street (north of St. Clair Avenue). Stan was an alum 1969 of St. Vitus Elementary School, Slovenska sola pri sv. Vidu, and Benedictine High School. Stan was employed at the USPS until his retirement. One of his greatest joys each year was to be an active participant and singer in the St. Vitus Christmas choir, performing at the annual "Concert of Sacred Songs" in St. Vitus Church. He had a kind word for all and an infectious smile.
He was a gentle soul to all. Stan was also preceded in death by his wife, Joanne. He is survived by a number of nephews and great-nephews and great-nieces as well as his faithful brother, Sly. Stan resided in Euclid, Ohio. May he rest in eternal peace. Please keep Stan in your prayers as well as all our departed family and friends.

Good afternoon to all on this most pleasant and sunny day (Fri Oct 18th) off the friendly shores of Lake Erie.

Fall is now in full swing. Already in the parish courtyard, permeable paver parking lot, side lots and the flower bed in the back area of the church, plants and flower beds are slowly each week being cleaned out and plants able to be put away until spring 2025 is in progress: "rozmarin" (rose mary), oleander, and other such plants in new plant containers in a dry but lighted area in the garages as well as in the rectory basement area. The hanging plants on the west side wall of the exterior of the church by the ADA compliant ramp, have however come to an end and have been discarded.

The current Heart Of A Shepherd (HOS) at St Vitus is ongoing with the majority of funds raised used or to be used to repair, maintenance and such related tasks. A portion however is also for the corporal works of mercy including the parish food bank/pantry. We have secured a mix of cereal and also various hygiene products such as toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes for distribution in either Oct or Nov 2024. The parish has invested over $100,000 in upgrading the lower church hall with code compliant electrical panel, new lighting and wiring, remodeled the two restrooms, new dry wall, insulation, paint work (walls and flooring) and five ductless air conditioning units as well as remodeled the kitchen; and a code compliant food pantry (compared with previous covering with "blue colored tarps, old pallets, old shelving and like kind). Now the food pantry has a set of refrigerators, set of freezers, proper steel-based shelves, carts and other items needed for this corporal work of mercy. The remodeling work was part and parcel via: Louis Kuhar, Peter Lavrisha, Tom Znidarsic and crew, summer help and yours truly. I cannot state over and over that the work of the food bank is due primarily to a very dedicated group of parishioners who have, month after month, year after year, and in some cases, decade after decade, served many in need. This includes Betty Svekric (coordinator), Rudy Sterk, Don Kern, Joe Maxse, Mary Ann Zadell-Scafe, and Carolyn Mallik; and parish staff/summer help when needed. Carrying 20 to 30 boxes up and down 23-to-24 steps to have the food supplies then sorted on shelves is taxing at times. We keep in our prayers those who have already departed this world for the Next: Lillian Krzywicki, Babe Cizel, Flo Jaksic, Mr. & Mrs. Karnik, Marcie Mills, Bernie Sajovec, the Turk sisters (Agnes, Esther, Billy), and others. May they rest in peace. An average of 45-to-55 bags are prepared each month with over 625,000 pounds of food distributed through the parish food bank. And started by the then young mladi kaplan, Rev. John Kumse.

In addition, St Vitus Parish provided over $100,000 and numerous volunteers (including great cooperation with students from St Edward High School, Divine Word volunteers, and other volunteers) to transition and remodel five apartments for incoming immigrants vented under US State Department protocols and two former store fronts where the corporal work of mercy of clothing distribution (includes shoes, blankets, and such items) long with repairing an old brick detached garage in cooperation with bona fide 501 c 3 "Joseph House of Cleveland Inc (JHCI)" the past 13 or so years.

Over 568 individuals have already donated to HOS (and some multiple times). Your continued generosity and support of HOS has made over 72 tasks completed on and around parish grounds. You can donate to HOS via a donation to "St. Vitus Endowment Corp." and either drop off in the weekly collection basket, drop off at the parish rectory, mail to the parish rectory (6019 Lausche Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44103) or via PayPal (go to parish website "www.saintvitus.org". HOS will conclude at St Vitus Parish effective Dec. 31, 2024. I also note we have met the two $10,000 challenge matching grants.

The last photo is of St Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral located in the city of Cleveland Tremont neighborhood where a fire torched the upper parts of this historic church structure as well as caused much damage on the interior of the church. Repair work is now in progress, estimated to cost up to and beyond $1.0 Million. Surprisingly, the framed structures for the onion shaped domes was in wood lumber, unlike the steel trusses for St Vitus Church.

To All:

I am pleased to provide to your attention the following progress reports regarding the Heart Of A Shepherd (HOS) initiative at St. Vitus Parish as of Oct. 17, 2024 and a few miscellaneous items. These reports have been presented to the parish pastoral and finance councils.

HEART OF A SHEPHERD (HOS)

Funds Raised (Gross): $500,833. Of this amount only $360 in outstanding pledges not yet received. Original goal: $45,000 (diocese) and $45,000 (parish needs).

Number of donors: 586.

Average donation per donor: $855. Over three years, average yearly donation: $285 and weekly average: $5.50.

Expenses: $438,438 ($320,078 actual and $118,360 estimated/projected tasks outstanding).

Number of tasks completed: 73. Tasks outstanding: Five to seven.

Donors: $5,000 or more: 19. $226,946. 3% donated 45%.

Donors: $4,999-to-$1,001: 85. $184,013. 15% donated 37%.

Donors: $1,000-to-$500: 80. $53,695. 14% donated 11%.

Donors: $499-to-$1: 402. $36,179. 68% donated 7%.

Number of Estates/bequeaths donated to HOS: Five (5). $14,396.

In comparison to the last such diocesan initiative (Rooted In Faith, Forward In Hope (RIF-FIH), over a three-year time period (2015-2017), $531,500 was raised. Of this amount, however, only $250,705 (48% of total with $45,000 required to be paid to mandated consultant via diocese for RIF-FIH) was returned to the parish with remaining funds for diocese use per the guidelines of RIF-FIH. The disbursed funds were returned back to the parish on a quarterly basis over 4.5 years. All raised funds were in control of (Cleveland) Catholic Community Foundation. The parish amount funds of RIF-FIH were eventually applied to the construction of new social hall (2020-2021) after 17 years of land acquisition, demolition, rezoning requirements, architectural plans, multiple meetings (diocese and parishioners), and eventual construction (1.5 years) during "Covid 19".

In contrast to RIF-FIH, the parish was responsible to raise $45,000 for the needs of the diocese with all other raised funds to remain for St. Vitus Parish needs regarding HOS. All funds raised were held at the parish with $15,000 paid to the diocese, each year, from 2022-to-2024. The parish fulfilled this obligation by end of June 2024. This approach, compared to RIF-FIH, enabled the parish to address a multitude of repair, maintenance and related tasks over the past 2.5 years that had been delayed due to the completion of the new social hall. No consultant was hired for HOS.

GRANT REQUESTS

One grant request has been submitted to a northeast Ohio private foundation for $10,000 (matching grant), with a portion of the request for HOS; and the remaining for the parish food bank, Joseph House of Cleveland Inc (JHCI), and one other bona fid 501 c 3 dealing with legally vented incoming immigrants to northeast Ohio under US State Department protocols. A decision on this request should be forthcoming on or around Thanksgiving 2024. In addition, a "matching grant" request has also been submitted to KSKJ Life via our affiliated KSKJ Lodge Christ The King #226 for $1,000 (maximum allowed with no more than two (2) such request per calendar year per each lodge). We are thankful to Christ The King #226 for supporting the works of the parish for many years, primarily Palm Sunday benefit dinners and summer parish picnics, alongside St. Vitus KSKJ Lodge #25. I note that affiliated AMLA lodge St. Anne Lodge #4 AMLA has also provided funding over many years for the works of the parish alongside the Home Office of AMLA (American Mutual Life Association) who annually donate $750 or more to the parish each calendar year as well as for specific events. In addition, The Frances and Janes S. Lausche Foundation and The Richman Bros. Foundation has consistently supported the good works of the parish for many, many years. We have also been most fortunate to have a number of anonymous individuals who have provided their own "Challenge Matching Grants" with the thought in mind of how the parish would benefit not only today but for the future.

MISCELLANEOUS

The legal office of the diocese of Cleveland has drafted a purchase agreement per diocese guidelines regarding sale of the parish school and auditorium and related buildings; and then a revised purchase agreement that has been presented to the (board of trustees' representative, SMDPHS) via the legal office, diocese of Cleveland.* Father Retar should be able to provide an update on this action within the next few weeks. Pray for wisdom.

You are requested to keep the following in your prayers: Barbara Walsh (Class of 1968, St Vitus School), Stan Kodrin, and Gabriel "Gabe" Zakelj. To all, have a great day and week! SK.

Most real property for a (Roman or Eastern Catholic parish) is normally titled in the name of The Office Of Bishop in a trust capacity. The new social hall and parking lot and real property on the corner of East 61st Street and St. Clair Avenue is however titled in the name of the parish endowment trust; and one permanent parcel behind the church: these were acquired via funding of the endowment trust; and not parish funds.

In closing, I report with great sadness the passing of Frank Sega Jr., 72 years-old. Frank was born on Aug. 15, 1952. Frank was the son of the late Frank (Sr.) and late Antonia "Toni" (nee Sepin). Frank was the sibling of Antonia "Toni" (Eric) Snyder, Jenny (Nicholas) Cipollo and Mary Ann (Robert) Krueger. Uncle of Robert and Carl Snyder, Marko and Nikko Cipollo and Anthony, Alexa, Evan and Tyler Krueger. Nephew of the late Stanka Cepin of Slovenia, late Veronica Janezic (Stan deceased), late Franc, and late Ivanka. Frank was a outgoing individual was a gifted mechanic and dedicated former employee of Lubrizol (Idaho). He loved the great outdoors. Member, Christ The King KSKJ Lodge #226 and St. Vitus Parish. Funeral plans are pending. In Christian charity, pray for the repose of his soul and all our faithfully departed. May he rest in eternal peace.

Veterans Day: We thank all deceased and living Veterans, and their families, for the many sacrifices made by so few for so many. To the departed and living Veterans and their families, we thank you. May all the departed rest in eternal peace!

To All:

Here are photos of St Vitus Village.

I.) The first three (3) photos are of the stain glass windows of former St Vitus Convent that were removed (with the decorative outside stonework and then re-installed). The theme of the stain glass windows is the life of Mary.

II.) The fourth photo is the cornerstone that initially to be on the outside but after much thought placed inside the Mary Chapel.

III.) The fifth photo is the Mary Chapel, dedicated in 2001 by late Bp. A. Edward Pevec.

IV.) The sixth photo is a decorative stone piece that reads: "Good friends are Angels on Earth." Donated by Ron Genovese.

V.) The seventh photo is the inside of the back of the Village building. Note that it lines up with the one church belltower.

VI.) The last two photos are the back court-yard of the Village building. The fountain has the Virgin Mary Statue. Originally designed by the late Zalka Likozar; and then repainted by the late Jozica Benedik, mother of Marge Kuhar.

Who would have thought that 25 years-ago the inner-city personal parish of St Vitus would have taken on the challenge to design and build an independent senior living facility with no support from the diocese of Cleveland or Cleveland Catholic Charities at the cost of $6.0 Million; and live to see it succeed. It has been a blessing to the parish, the St. Clair Avenue neighborhood, city of Cleveland and broader community. We now also have an additional ministry for those to receive a transplant at Cleveland Clinic and provide reasonable housing for their spouse, sibling, relative, or caretaker, thanks to Fr. Boznar, Donna Marie Boekley, Louise Strauss and both parish pastoral and finance council members. Thank you to all who made this idea become not only a reality but a tremendous witness to our Catholic faith despite at times deaf ears. Enjoy the lovely fall weather.

From the Lepanto Institute:

The Red Dragon of Marxism is on the rise. Boiling up from the bowels of Hell, this philosophy is being spread rapidly by Chinese-influenced corporations, politicians, and institutions. Today, the greatest threat to Christianity looms ominously over our Church and our nation.

This dragon’s life was born from the poisoned soul of Karl Marx, whose philosophy has caused a century of war, the slaughter of innocent children through abortion, the perversion of human sexuality, and the greatest system of control and brutality the world has ever seen. One is reminded of what was written in the Book of Genesis regarding the world before the Great Flood, wherein God saw “that the wickedness of men was great on the earth, and that all the thought of their heart was bent upon evil at all times.”

But Our Lady has given us the greatest weapon imaginable in order to combat this dragon and send it back to Hell where it belongs. The Most Holy Rosary is THE weapon against the Dragon of Marxism and meditating on each of the Mysteries of the Rosary can provide great insights into how each one completely destroys the planks of Marx’s ideology. For the sake of brevity, we’ll just focus on the Joyful Mysteries.

The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation

Marx’s entire philosophy is built upon the tension between two vices; greed and envy. He accuses, not entirely wrongly, the upper class of the greedy enslavement of the lower classes. But rather than address the upper class and remind them of their duties through filial love to care for those who struggle to feed their families, he appeals to the suffering of the laborers and fans the flames of envy into an all-out rage. His demagoguery is built upon vice, encouraging a class warfare that leads directly to revolution.

In the first mystery of the Rosary, we meditate on the Annunciation of the Incarnate Word, given to Our Lady by the Angel Gabriel. St. Bernard of Clairvaux explained in his homily In Praise of the Virgin Mother:

“You have heard, O Virgin, that you will conceive and bear a son; you have heard that it will not be by man but by the Holy Spirit. The angel awaits an answer; it is time for him to return to God who sent him. We too are waiting, O Lady, for your word of compassion; the sentence of condemnation weighs heavily upon us.”

It was through Our Lady’s reply, “Thy will be done,” that she answers the war of vices proclaimed by Marx. Marx announced a revolution which he claimed would be the salvation of the working class, and it was a revolution predicated on grasping at power, wealth and control for the supremacy of the state. Yet, Gabriel announced the salvation of men’s souls through the shedding of Divine blood! All of Heaven awaited her answer because without her willful consent to God’s proposal, man was doomed to the material salvation offered by the likes of Karl Marx. Through meditation on this mystery, we give thanks to Almighty God for Our Lady’s consent to bring the Savior into the world.

The Second Joyful Mystery: The Visitation

As soon as Gabriel left Our Lady, Scripture tells us that she “made haste” to be with her cousin Elizabeth, who was then in her sixth month of pregnancy. Thus, filled with the Holy Spirit, and carrying the Christ in her womb, Our Lady’s first desire was to help family and serve others. She is the very model of the corporal works of mercy.

Marx, on the other hand, proposes a system that abolishes and ridicules the service of charity and seeks to impose a heavy-handed system of a labor-fed society. In Marx’s system, there is no love of neighbor, but only the service of all under the imposing gaze of the state.

More after the jump...

The Third Joyful Mystery: The Birth of Christ

As we contemplate the Birth of the Savior of mankind, we have in mind the image of Joseph, Mary and the infant Christ Child lying in a manger. This image alone could fill volumes of contemplative meditations. Here, we see the image of the Holy Family as an Earthly representation of the Holy Trinity; Joseph the Father, Our Lady filled with the Grace of the Holy Spirit, and Our Blessed Lord bridging the gap between Trinity and Family. But in all the various ways we could contemplate this Mystery, what remains is the image of the family.

Marx’s revolutionary manifesto asked, “What will be the influence of communist society on the family?” His answer is to abolish it by destroying its very foundations:

It will transform the relations between the sexes into a purely private matter which concerns only the persons involved and into which society has no occasion to intervene. It can do this since it does away with private property and educates children on a communal basis, and in this way removes the two bases of traditional marriage – the dependence rooted in private property, of the women on the man, and of the children on the parents.

If the Holy Family is the model for all families, and the Holy Family is the reflection of the Holy Trinity, then Marx’s assault upon the family is no less an assault on God, which is why, at its very core, Communism is an atheist philosophy.

The Fourth Joyful Mystery: The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple

When the priest Simeon received Our Lord from Our Lady, he prophesied: “Behold this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted.” At this very moment, he foretold of the crucifixion of Our Lord, and in so doing, he told Our Lady that “thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.”

Here we can see the willingness to suffer and die out of love. Our Lady knows that because she shares in the great joy contained in Our Lord, that she will also share in His suffering. There is no man who has ever lived who knows suffering like Our Lady does. At the Annunciation, she knew that if all mankind would fall and suffer because of Eve’s rebellion against her husband and God, that all mankind would be saved because the Christ Child would take the sin and pain of all mankind to Himself, and it could only be accomplished by her consent. At the Visitation, she knew the joy the Divine Savior growing within her womb would bring to others. After His birth, she laid Him upon the dead wood of a manger, which is a food trough for animals … a manger that would prefigure the wood of His Cross as He became the food for all mankind. And while Simeon was prophesying the suffering Our Lady would share in her Son’s Passion, she embraced it all with humility.

In the second chapter of St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he said, “Jesus Christ, Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross.”

But Marx preaches a rejection of suffering. Rather than accepting one’s state in life, Marx preaches an anti-Gospel of envy, where the collective of workers cast off their servitude and rise against the upper class and GRASP what is not theirs.

The Fifth Joyful Mystery: The Finding of the Child Jesus Teaching in the Temple

In the final Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, we read the conversation between Our Lady and Our Lord, wherein Our Lady asks him to explain why He left them frantic for three days. At the end of the conversation, St. Luke tells us, “And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them.”

The lesson to be had here is Holy Obedience. Our Lord delights in those who are obedient. Beginning with Adam and Eve and running throughout all of Scripture, we see a theme of the curses associated with disobedience and the blessings associated with obedience. When we are obedient to God and subject to proper authority, we are pleasing to Him. When we are disobedient and rebel against rightful authority, we incite His wrath.

The materialist philosophy of Marx’s Communist Manifesto is a blueprint for rebellion against God and rebellion against rightful authority. When one considers the state-sponsored executions, the state-generated famines, the wars, and the spread of abortion, its bitter fruits have resulted in the deaths of countless millions.

Even now, the horrors of Marx’s philosophies are infecting nearly every facet of human civilization. It comes in the form of contraception, abortion, homosexuality, on-going rebellious movements, and every other man-centered -ism that takes our minds away from the Four Last Things; death, judgment, Heaven and Hell.

As we can see, the Rosary provides the answer. The Mysteries we meditate upon provide for us an understanding that man is not made for this world, as Marx would have us believe … but that we are made for Love of God and Love of neighbor. But more than that, The Rosary is the remedy to Marx’s poison.

The Golden Legend tells us that St. Martha went to the Southern part of France, and while she was there, a horrible dragon had taken up residence in the River of Rhone. The locals, try as they may to defeat it, could do nothing to slay this beast. According to the Legend, the locals asked Martha for help, who went with them to find the dragon. They found it devouring a man, but St. Martha approached with the sign of the cross and cast holy water on it, at which point the creature became as docile as a sheep. She bound it with her own girdle and led it to the villagers, who then killed it with spears.

Through this image, we can see a foreshadowing of the prophesied Triumph of Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart. Our Lady asked us to pray the Rosary every day. If the dragon scourging us now is the philosophy of Marx, can we not see how the symbol of the cross and the girdle of St. Martha, which bound her dragon, make the loop of beads and the cross of the Rosaries we have today? The beast facing St. Martha could not resist her, and neither will the Marxist Dragon of today resist our Lady.

Oh, Holy Virgin of the Rosary, pray for us!

I've recently been in contact with Alex K, an article about his 2018 arrest below. He is currently under edict from the Canadian govt limiting his freedom of speech on social media. His law suit proceeds. He has been sharing the PFLI pamphlet Infant Homicides through Contraceptives for several months and has just completed a short summary/analysis for Canadians, which he will share once total finalized.

Let us pray for this brave young man, and that we may see more pharmacists (inter alia) show such courage in the face of enormous injustice.

I don't speak French but Brave does (translated from French):

A Montrealer falsely accused of obstruction for filming police officers from a distance, then acquitted despite lies by one of the officers, has filed a $30,000 lawsuit against the City of Montreal.

“Had they told the truth, there would have been no arrest or illegal detention, since the plaintiff at no time obstructed their work,” states the civil suit filed by Alexander Georgiev Kissiakov this week at the Montreal courthouse.

Mr. Kissiakov, 27, is having a hard time digesting his unnecessary arrest in October 2018.

At the time, he was walking down a street in Ville-Émard, a neighborhood in southwestern Montreal, when he saw two police officers talking to citizens. Curious, he then approached about 20 feet away from the intervention and began filming the scene.

Except that the two officers, Lisanne Boulette and Hugo Laverdure, didn't like being filmed and asked the man to stop, which he refused to do.

“We're going to arrest him because I think it's weird,” said officer Boulette, before Mr. Kissiakov was handcuffed.

He was then detained for a few hours before being charged with obstruction, according to the lawsuit filed by Me Justin Wee.

At trial, police officer Laverdure testified, under oath, that the accused was “about six feet away”. Except that the defense submitted a video proving the much greater distance, so the charges were quickly withdrawn.
