I have been a doula for 9 years and taught childbirth education for 7 years. I am now in midwifery school full time with the end goal to provide community midwifery in Prairie du Chien, WI and the surrounding areas.

April is cesarean awareness month. Giving birth via a c-section is not easy! As doulas, we understand the sacrifice parents make when they must have a surgical birth to safely bring their babies earthside.

Why awareness? Because it is important people understand how transformative birth is, including c-section birth.

All birth has the potential to be positive and empowering, including c-section birth. This is why prenatal support and birth doula support are still important for c-section parents.

One of our instructors, is supporting a scheduled c-section client today.

The dad from my recent doula birth asked if this birth “counts” towards my midwifery training. And I said no, but quickly followed up with explaining that it’s so much more than numbers. Every birth teaches us so much, and I’m trying to pin point what I learned from this birth (still processing!). Major shout out to . Their L&D team are so talented, supportive, and it was really great to be there. Dr. Farris and the nurses (Casey and Amanda!) made everything so smooth and seamless in birth, where nothing is smooth or seamless 😆

This is another myth I hear time and time again: "It is unsafe to VBAC beyond 40 weeks."

Here's the truth: Going beyond 40 weeks gestation is not a contraindication to labor after cesarean.

While some studies have found lower VBAC odds after 40 weeks, I question the role of provider pressure and birthing parent stress on labor, spontaneous or otherwise.

What about the VBAC odds among those who feel supported during the last weeks of their pregnancy rather than facing the deadline of a repeat cesarean on the books?

As ACOG says, "Gestational age greater than 40 weeks along should not preclude [planned VBAC.]" *

There are no hard stops in terms of gestational age due to prior cesarean.

Want to learn more about VBAC and the evidence on uterine rupture risk by gestational age? Go to vbacfacts.com/courses

* I replaced "TOLAC" for "planned VBAC" in ACOG's quote.
