Many (but not all) people with Down syndrome think and behave in concrete ways. This can be very functional. For example, people with Down syndrome often excel at well-defined tasks that can be consistently completed in the same way.

Conversely, abstract thinking and concepts, such as time, may be more challenging for some people with Down syndrome to understand. For example, many people with Down syndrome can tell what time it is on a clock or watch but they may talk about events that happened many years ago as if they occurred just a few days or weeks ago.

There is an entire chapter dedicated to concrete thinking and behavior in Mental Wellness in Adults with Down Syndrome by Dennis McGuire, PhD, and Brian Chicoine, MD. A free PDF of the book is available at the link below. Chapter 5 is on concrete thinking and behaving.

Introducing our new FUR-ever friend, Cole!
Cole comes to us from the Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter and has quickly become a friend to all, including Hope! His partial blindness doesn't stop him from playing, cuddling, and joining in the fun! Cole reminds us, once again, that anyone (or animal) can flourish when given a place and a purpose.

Introducing Hope - our newest (and fluffiest) friend at Unity!
Hope brings smiles to our faces, excitement to our activities, and cuddles to our laps.
We love taking care of her as she brings new light and energy to our days. Her 'motor' never stops, so we are pretty sure she likes being here, too.

Unity is now, truly, Where Hope Lives.

Unity Day Center Clients enjoyed a visit from the Prairie du Chien Fire Department! They were able to see the trucks and other equipment up close - which was a big hit - and took part in important fire safety discussions.

Unity Day Center clients had a great time making their own Pick a Patch Tea Towels! They were able to choose the patches they wanted and where to place them. I think they all did a wonderful job!
