Su***de deaths in mothers are now more common than some physical childbirth complications.
The 2025 Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health reported: Maternal su***de deaths are now estimated to be more common than deaths caused by postpartum hemorrhage or hypertensive disorders.
That is a massive shift in maternal health.
Current data shows 1 in 5 mothers experience:
* anxiety
* depression
* postpartum mental health disorders
* or severe stress-related conditions
The highest su***de risk may occur MONTHS after childbirth β not immediately after birth.
A 2026 maternal mental health fact sheet reported that peak incidence of maternal su***de occurs 9β12 months postpartum.
This matters because many women are no longer being closely monitored medically at that point.
Mental health support for mothers is not weakness. It is necessary healthcare.
