Today is normally the day when people ditch their New Year’s resolutions, but we wanted to let you know that it’s okay if you aren’t on track, you can still succeed with your resolutions using goal setting.

Look at your goals you’ve set. Is there a way to make some slight adjustments to achieve that first step? “We constantly set goals for ourselves that we feel we should easily be able to achieve, but our skills vary day to day which influences our behavior. Looking at this with goal setting can really make a positive impact,” says Angela Haley, LCPC, CCS, clinical manager of Inpatient Services at Northern Light Acadia Hospital.

For example, let’s say you drink three cups of coffee a day and want to get down to one cup a day. Instead of going to one cup immediately, try drinking only two cups for a day, then go to one cup in a couple of weeks. This small change helps make your goal more achievable.

If you also need a cheat day, take it. Have a day of fun and then get back on track the next day.

Today Northern Light Health wrapped up True North Week with two awards that reflect the pinnacle of recognition, honoring those who embody each of the True North Award criteria through unwavering preoccupation with raising quality, making access easy, guiding the way, and seeing the individual. The Shining Star Award is presented to an individual and the Constellation Award is presented to a team of shining stars.

We are thrilled that our Referral Management team at AR Gould won the Honorable Mention for the Constellation Award!

This cohesive team navigates complex systems to meet the needs of every patient whether referred to our facility or referred outside our facility. They maintain a keen awareness that for each and every task and preauthorization, there is a real person awaiting necessary care. This team regularly talks with anxious patients worried about their insurance coverage or about a new, often scary referral to a specialist, and remains adept at guiding them through the complex system with wonderful care and compassion. They maintain close contact with each office, helping to maximize every opportunity for access by keeping schedules filled, working in collaboration with departmental leaders to track outstanding referrals, and putting great time and energy into prompt turnaround times with focus on urgent needs. Their leadership regularly goes above and beyond, taking deep dives into any insurance denial, often resulting in recouped payments and improved processes.

AR Gould's Referral Management team has a depth of expertise that is crucial to the workflow of patients transferring from service to service. The extensive variety of insurance companies and their specific rules and requirements often provide a barrier to patients receiving the services they need. This team seamlessly works through such challenges ensuring that patients have access to the care they need when they need it. They are detail-oriented, ensuring all requirements are met prior to sending referrals forward, and they are known for implementing innovative processes.

Since most of this team works remotely, a Teams call was held with some of the hospital's leaders today to announce the news of this recognition and celebrate the great work they do. This photo captures the moment, although it does not capture the entire team, since some were not available to be on the call.

Congratulations to each and every member of this amazing team!

It's day three of True North Week at Northern Light Health, and we have another person to celebrate at AR Gould! Amanda Eivers, RN, manager of our Medical Surgical Telemetry Unit and Hospitalist Services was selected as the statewide winner of the Improving Quality Award!! This award recognizes a person who drives quality improvement through innovation, teamwork, and efficiency.

Amanda leads by example, modeling consistent dedication to our patients, staff, organization, and goals. She demonstrates a strong focus on improving patient outcomes and maintaining the highest standards of safe patient care.

Amanda works to improve the quality of care on her floor through collaborative efforts with front-line staff and ancillary departments. She leads with patients and employees in the forefront, is supportive of her team and colleagues, providing necessary assistance, guidance, and open communication which fosters great teamwork, trust, respect, and a positive environment.

She excels at change management with an understanding of how to move quality initiatives forward to achieve lasting results. She regularly connects with team members, arriving in the wee hours of the morning to ensure ongoing availability to meet with not only day shift, but also night shift, and she genuinely cares about each one's well-being.

She is not afraid to have crucial conversations to ensure everyone is working to their maximum potential, making certain that staffing is appropriate and safe while being mindful of limited resources. Through her sustained efforts of walking the talk, Amanda has earned the trust of all.

Congratulations, Amanda, for being selected the statewide winner for Northern Light Health's Raising Quality Award!

On day two of True North Week, the statewide winner and honorable mention were announced for the Making Access Easy Award. This award is given to someone who makes health and care accessible and straightforward to the people we serve. They proactively mitigate barriers to remove distractions, enabling the entire care team, including patient and family, to focus time and energy on active participation in the care experience.

Of the 11 very qualified nominations from across the state (one from each Northern Light Health organization), AR Gould was proud that our nominee, Ashley Legassie, LCSW, our social worker at our Dialysis Center, was selected as the Honorable Mention!

Dialysis patients cannot survive extended periods of time absent of life-sustaining treatment. Ashley goes above and beyond to mitigate the barriers to treatment that often plague so many patients.

She plays an instrumental role in processing new admissions, advocating for ways to accommodate new patients as quickly as possible. She has instituted individualized meetings with new patients and their support teams (some to accommodate schedules as early as 5 AM!) to explain our treatment processes, sign consents, review insurances, talk about barriers, and more.

Ashley assists with timely transfers of patients to and from our facility, and, working with the home hemodialysis team, she prepares patients for the transition to home dialysis. Ashley guides patients through this transition to eliminate challenges, ensure their long-term success, and open an on-site dialysis opportunity for others in need.

Ashley works closely with other service providers to surround patients with resources and build comprehensive plans of care. Navigating financial assistance, coordinating with transportation agencies, offering guidance on the importance of an advanced directive, and even facilitating access to food – dialysis-diet approved, Ashley’s efforts extend far beyond regular weekly appointments.

Ashley always puts the patient first, spending hours talking with patients, recognizing the importance connection to build trust and provide comprehensive care.

To honor Ashley, hospital and Dialysis Center leaders presented her with a beautiful bouquet of roses, as well as cupcakes so she could celebrate with her coworkers.

This is True North Week across the Northern Light Health system. True North recognizes individuals and teams whose behaviors and accomplishments exemplify a profound dedication to the Northern Light Health promise and commitments.

Each of the nine hospitals, as well as Home Care and Hospice, and a group of other system services, all submit their top nominee for consideration in one of each of the six award categories for this prestigious employee award.

Today the Guiding the Way Award winner and honoree where announced. This award recognizes an individual whose efforts enable families and individuals to receive clear guidance through the care experience within the Northern Light family and across the entire healthcare continuum.

We are thrilled to celebrate AR Gould’s very own Kaitlyn Umphrey from for our Cancer Care practice, who was selected as the honorable mention. Hospital leaders, Dr. Lukas Emery (the person who nominated her), and Brenda Baker, Cancer Care manager, all joined in to present flowers to Kaitlyn as well as cupcakes to her and her co-workers to enjoy.

Kaitlyn works with some of our most vulnerable patients and their families, striving to ensure each patient receives the support they need to aid them through the cancer treatment process.

A skilled educator who displays great empathy and patience, she takes time to ensure understanding at a time when patients and families so often feel overwhelmed, educating and re-educating with grace. She breaks through barriers to ensure that patients and their support teams have full understanding of their options and their treatment plans, allowing each one to feel important, supported, and heard.

Her consistent willingness to provide support and guidance extends beyond office appointments. Kaitlyn reaches out to patients to ensure they are armed with the understanding and awareness they need to be successful in their treatment. And, if by chance, she needs additional insight or clarity, she conducts research and consults with others to determine how to best meet our patients' needs.

Her approach, example, commitment to clinical improvements, and willingness to help, makes Kaitlyn a tremendous leader not only in our hospital, but throughout The County. As is often reported by our patients, she is available, helpful, caring, and knowledgeable. We are so fortunate to have her as part of our team!

New Year’s Eve is a time to celebrate the start of a new year. We all want to enjoy the celebrations, but we also must be mindful of our safety, and of others too.

If you’re planning to be outside for a celebration, be sure to dress warmly. If you or others start to show signs of hypothermia, make sure to get into a warm building or to the nearest hospital.

It’s okay to enjoy a cocktail or two to celebrate the event, just make sure to not binge drink, as it can negatively impact your health. Be sure to have a designated driver if you’re planning to drink on New Year’s Eve so you can safely get home after the celebrations.

Do you know the best tips to keep your baby safe while they sleep?

This is how our amazing labor and delivery team educate patients about safe sleep.

1. Place baby on their back to sleep every time.
2. Place baby on a firm, flat mattress.
4. Room share (not bed share) for at least the first 6 months.
5. Nothing in the crib, except for a tightly fitted sheet and pacifier if using one.
6. Use of pacifier for naps and at night.
7. Avoid smoking, va**ng, and impairment while caring for your baby.
8. Dress the baby for sleep to avoid over heating (no hats).
9. Attend all scheduled visits with the baby’s provider.
10. Exercise caution when purchasing baby products and devices. Ensure their safety for safe sleep.
11. Share these Safe Sleep tips with your community.

Also, during the winter months, be sure to keep the bedroom at a comfortable temperature (not too hot, not too cool) to ensure a safe sleep environment.
