We spend a lot of time on our feet. In fact, the average person will walk the equivalent of twice around the world in a lifetime! With that in mind, podiatrists – doctors who specialize in foot and ankle care, are quick to provide tips to help you keep your feet healthy.

1. Inspect your feet regularly, looking for changes.

2. Use good foot hygiene – this includes washing your feet daily, wearing clean, dry socks, clipping your toenails regularly, and keeping them clean.

3. Use lotion to keep the skin moist, so it doesn’t crack.

4. Wear well-fitted shoes with appropriate support, especially when exercising, and avoid walking barefoot.

5. Don’t ignore foot pain. Symptoms that increase or do not resolve within a reasonable period of time need to be evaluated by a podiatric physician.

In honor of National Drug Take Back Day today (Saturday, April 25), we wanted to share some new efforts by AR Gould regarding safe disposal of drugs for our patients, staff, and community.

A drug disposal bin has been placed in the hospital's main lobby. You can use this to safely dispose of unwanted, unused, or expired prescription or over-the-counter medications. Medications in any dosage form are accepted but they need to be in their original container or a sealed bag.

For those who can't make it at the hospital to use this drug disposal bin, we now have envelopes in our practices that provide a free, postage-paid mail-back disposal option you can use to safely dispose of unwanted household medications by mail.

Not accepted for either of these options are herbal remedies, vitamins, supplements, cosmetics, other personal care products, empty medical devices, batteries, sharps, mercury-containing thermometers, and illicit drugs.

To protect your privacy, you should remove all personally identifiable information on prescription labels or materials before disposal.

Please take the time to dispose of your medications properly. Unused medications sitting in cabinets are at risk of being stolen, misused, or causing accidental overdoses. Proper disposal also avoids contamination of water supplies that can occur when medications are flushed or thrown in the trash.

We are happy to welcome Dr. Lisa Torgersen to Northern Light AR Gould Hospital. She is a full spectrum family medicine physician. While her duties have started as part of our hospitalist team, caring for inpatients in our hospital, her duties will be expanding in time to include both pediatric and obstetric care – areas in which she is well-experienced in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.

Dr. Torgersen completed her medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, Dominica. She completed her residency in family medicine, in the rural health track, at Central Maine Medical Center. She is board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Torgersen lives in rural Maine with her husband, three horses, and a house-trained pot belly pig. She is looking forward to exploring this region and enjoying all the recreational and cultural opportunities we have to offer.

Welcome, Dr. Torgersen!

This is Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, a chance for us to recognize the important contributions of laboratory professionals and pathologists who support patient care every day. We are grateful for the skilled laboratory professionals who help care for our patients. Their work is often behind the scenes, but it plays a critical role in diagnosis, treatment decisions, and overall patient safety.

Thank you to this team for all that they do!

Occupational Therapy (OT) Month is a time to celebrate our skilled OTs, as well as the achievements of patients who work hard towards gaining independence in their daily living and activities.

Occupational therapists help patients overcome challenges with self-care, day-to-day routines, and cognitive, physical, and mobility issues. They teach patients to use adaptive equipment and create strategies to use in their unique situations and environments. This can include ways to improve functional mobility, aid memory and concentration; address fall risk; assess home safety; and recommend modifications for accessibility.

OTs also use specific play and strategic adaptations to help children reach goals and developmental milestones to improve their daily life, focusing on how the child moves, plays, and communicates with the world around them.

At AR Gould, we have nine OTs who provide both inpatient and outpatient care. Our OTs consistently provide individualized, compassionate care that makes a lasting difference in the lives of our patients.

On behalf of AR Gould Hospital, Linda Menard hosted toddler time at the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library in Presque Isle today. This was one of multiple activities taking place this week to celebrate National Library Week.

In honor of Earth Day, Linda read a story on how mother nature brings us the plants and trees. Children also planted flowers they could take home with them and did a coloring activity around this theme. Eleven people took part in the event.

A special thanks to Linda for representing us so well at community events such as these.

Parkinson’s disease is a condition that affects the brain and causes the loss of cells that produce dopamine, which helps control movement and mood. While there is no cure – at least not yet – there are steps you can take to slow down the progression of the disease.

Dr. Markos Poulopoulos of Northern Light Neurology at Eastern Maine Medical Center explains that the way PD manifests and progresses can be different for everyone. “It has one name – Parkinson’s Disease, but many of us now refer to it as Parkinson’s Diseases, because it can be so different from one person to the next.”

He points to three key things for those diagnosed with PD and their families should know.

1. Education/Communication: Resources are out there; learn all you can to help relieve some of the anxiety of a new diagnosis.

2. Medication: There are several types of medications that can help with symptom management. Most aim to manage the levels of dopamine in your body and/or other neurotransmitters that affect these levels.

3. Treatment: This can include medication, rehab therapy, lifestyle changes, and surgery. These can improve your symptoms and quality of life.

“Most importantly, don’t panic if you get this diagnosis,” says Dr. Poulopoulos. “This is not a fatal disease, and you can still have a long life. Progression can be very slow, especially if you exercise, have an active lifestyle, and maintain a good diet.”

He also points out that huge milestones are happening in dopamine research, which is promising for the future.

Referral specialists from AR Gould Hospital, Northern Light Home Care & Hospice, Pines Health Services, Phoenix Direct Care, Full Circle Health Care, and Mic Mac Health were all on campus today to take part in AR Gould's annual Specialty Fair.

This annual event includes half a dozen presentations by providers and other professionals as they share information on their respective specialty areas at the hospital; these topics and presenters change each year. This year's topics included Imaging, Occupational and Speech Therapy, Sleep Diagnostics, Orthopedics, Eye Care, and Dermatology.

Those attending, who are from the primary care world, also have the chance to interact with the referral team from AR Gould's specialty practices - asking questions, learning more about processes, and sharing concerns about any issues they may have experienced in the referral process. It's also the chance for this group of professionals to network and build connections.

A very special thank you to all who attended or presented at the event, as well as all who worked behind the scenes to make it happen!

Myth: Parkinson’s is a death sentence.

Reality: PD is not a fatal disease. You can still have a long life after being diagnosed. It’s all about symptom management.

Myth: If someone with Parkinson's looks good, then they also feel good.

Reality: PD symptoms fluctuate, and not all are visible. The way someone appears at one moment may not reflect the way that they feel most of the time.

Myth: PD can “flare up" unexpectedly.

Reality: Parkinson’s does not work this way. Although symptoms may fluctuate throughout the day, the progression of PD is very slow. If PD symptoms worsen quickly, then it is critical to search for an underlying cause.

Myth: Your doctor can predict your future.

Reality: PD is highly variable from person to person. Even a PD expert has no way of knowing what the future holds for an individual with PD.
