We held a food drive at AR Gould this week as part of our annual United Way efforts and to help with concerns regarding food insecurity in the region. In addition to the many food items donated by our team, $562 was also collected. These dollars stretch far with the purchasing power of Catholic Charities and gives them the ability to purchase what is needed most. The food and funds were presented to Sarah Duncan from United Way of Aroostook and Dixie Shaw on behalf of Catholic Charities on Friday afternoon.

Thank you to all who supported this important effort!

AR Gould Hospital's 2025 Lights of Life campaign is underway. We invite you to honor and remember friends, family members, caregivers, and others who have been affected by cancer. Every dollar raised through Lights of Life will stay local to support cancer care services in Aroostook County.

“This fundraiser is an annual tradition at AR Gould, raising more than $100,000 over the past 17 years,” says Laura Turner, Director of Community Outreach and Philanthropy at the hospital. “Lights of Life is a way you can make a difference for those now in treatment or those who will need treatment in the future. The expense associated with cancer can be particularly challenging for patients and families. This program makes a huge difference in their lives.”

Lights of Life includes the sale of colored lights to help “brighten” the holidays for patients at the hospital being treated for cancer and their loved ones; the cost of each light ranges from $15 to $500 depending on the color. Lights are for sale through the end of the year.

This year’s star has been purchased in memory of John Lisnik, Sr. by his widow, Donna, and the Lisnik/Reed family. John has been described as a true friend, a patriot, a loving family man, and a tireless public servant.

Donations will be gratefully accepted in John’s memory, as well as in memory or honor of any person, family, or group which a donor chooses to designate. The purchase of lights can be made online at northernlighthealth.org/ARGouldLights or by filling out the form from a Lights of Life brochure. These brochures have been mailed to past donors and can also be picked up in the main lobby of the hospital or in the Cancer Care practice.

The names of all who are remembered or honored by the purchase of a light will be posted on the hospital’s website as well as displayed in the hospital. Upon request, Lights of Life note cards will be provided for those who purchase lights and want to send a message to honorees or their families.

Gus has been coming to physical therapy at AR Gould for four years. He went from barely able to walk with a cane when he started to now walking pain free. He stopped by recently with some fruit to thank the team for all they have done for him now that he has completed his final PT appointment.

He noted how grateful he is to all of the staff who helped him gain back his mobility and his life after his accident.

"He is very special to us, and for him to come here after 'graduating' and request pictures with whoever was available was so special. He sure is one of a kind," says Amber Philbrick from the rehab department.

A few of our many military Veterans at AR Gould Hospital gathered on Monday to have a photo taken by one of the remembrance tables on display this month to honor fallen, missing, or imprisoned service members. This table is in the main lobby of the hospital, but similar tables are on display in the hospital's Pinkham lobby and in the lobby at North Street Healthcare.

There are several key elements as part of the display, each with a symbolic meaning and all signifying remembrance, hope, and the sacrifices of these individuals. A poster by each of the tables explains the meaning of each element.

As another way to another Veterans, yellow ribbons are available at the main and Pinkham lobby for anyone who would like on to wear the rest of the month to show their support of Veterans. Red, white, and blue ribbons are also available in the main lobby; these are available for all Veterans to proudly show your service. A limited number of special Northern Light Health Veterans lanyards are available for Veterans who work for us.

We want to thank all of our Veterans at AR Gould and in our community for your service!

Please note that many of our practices and administrative offices will be closed tomorrow in honor of Veterans Day. However, the hospital's lab draw station and Imaging/Radiology department will be open until 2pm, as will the door to the main entrance. A few practices will also remain open, so patients who have an appointment for tomorrow should plan to arrive as scheduled.

Those who arrive to visit patients after the main entrance closes at 2pm should use the Emergency Department entrance.

Our Walk-In Care clinics will remain open as usual (Presque Isle, 8am to 8 pm; Caribou, 12pm to 8pm). As always, our Emergency Department remains open 24 hours a day/seven days a week for those needing emergent care.

The installation of AR Gould Hospital's new Siemens TrueBeam™ linear accelerator was completed in late September, with the first patients receiving treatments with it on September 29. This machine provides critical, lifesaving radiation therapy to cancer patients across Aroostook County.

The Varian IX C Series LINAC previously in use at the hospital was a first-generation LINAC and a great improvement over older radiation treatment equipment; but that equipment was nearing the end of its useful life from a technology perspective, according to Dr. Naghmeh Isfahanian, the hospital’s lead radiation oncologist.

“This new LINAC device and software is very sophisticated and gives us the chance to treat cancer more aggressively, while at the same time sparing normal tissue from radiation and minimizing the side effects of the radiation,” she says. “The ability of daily imaging will help us make sure the set up for treatment is more accurate and faster. Some treatments, depending on the kind of cancer and purpose of treatment, may be done in one session rather than multiple ones.”

The purchase of this multi-million-dollar machine was made possible through Congressionally Directed Spending.

Several area high schools came to AR Gould Hospital to participate in the latest Aroostook Career Exploration (ACE) event on Thursday. Gaining exposure to the medical field helps students make informed decisions about potential careers and learn what we do at AR Gould.

The ACE program is coordinated through the hospital's Clinical Education Department and allows students to briefly explore career opportunities they may be interested in. Forty-three students toured Rehabilitation Therapy, Radiology/Imaging, Pharmacy, EMS, the Print Shop, and Materials Management. The students were split into four smaller groups and experienced about 20 minutes in each department. Part of the ACE program emphasizes that non-clinical careers are available and very important.

Surveys are completed by students before and after the tour to better understand how we can improve the presentations of each department. Several more ACE events are planned in 2026. Thank you to everyone involved that made this event a success! We look forward to seeing our ACE students again in January.

A breakfast was held on Wednesday morning to celebrate all of our Veterans-In Partnership (VIPs), as well as to welcome 17 more into this elite group. While all employees are considered very important at the organization, this impressive group is the hospital’s most tenured, all having achieved the status of 20 years or more of service.

Employees who reached the 20-year milestone this year were presented a small gift as they were officially welcomed into the ranks of VIPs. Among those were, seated from left: Amber Philbrick, Tamra Ford, Betsy Carson, and Jill Thibeau. Standing from left: Pam Morin, Amy Durland-Faulkner, Claudette Bell, Jeri Ball, Jill Elsworth, Chuck Ames, Amanda Bonville, and Betsy Carson. With them is Dr. Reynolds, hospital president and a VIP with more than 30 years of service at AR Gould. Absent from photo: Deborah Bouchard, Jennifer Chasse, Deborah Crandall, Tina Melvin, and Gina Ritchie.

The number of VIPs fluctuates as employees retire, and others are welcomed into the ranks. Currently, there are now 164 team members considered VIPs.

The annual VIP breakfast is always a special event. We are happy to share a few photos capturing some of the VIPs that took part. Their service to AR Gould ranges from 20 to 52 years. What an amazing group! Thank you for your commitment to the hospital and our community!

Many of our team members had fun today getting into the Halloween spirit. Here are just a few of our many folks who dressed for the occasion.

We want to wish everyone a very safe and happy Halloween. Please take extra caution driving on the roads tonight and watch out for trick or treaters.

As we come to the end of October, which is National Physical Therapy Month, we need to take a moment to proudly recognize our incredible Physical Therapy team — a dedicated group of highly educated professionals who bring compassion, expertise, and evidence-based care to every patient they serve.

In our rural healthcare setting, our therapists truly do it all — from caring for the tiniest infants to helping older adults regain their strength and independence. They support patients recovering from surgery, navigating cancer treatment, and overcoming injury or illness — meeting each individual where they are with skill, patience, and heart.

Whether working in the hospital or outpatient clinics, this team is united by one goal: to help every patient move better, feel stronger, and live their best life.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our incredible support staff — on the units, in the office, and behind the scenes — who keep everything running smoothly and make excellent patient care a priority.
