This cuddly young kitty loves to play with her stuffed squirrel and snuggle up for naps. Snickers was recently in for vaccines and to be spayed.

Did you know? Most cats have their first heat cycle around 6 months of age. BUT some cats go into heat and become pregnant as young as 4 months old! A single unspayed cat can have 2โ€“3 litters per year, with 3โ€“5 kittens per litter๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆthat adds up quickly!

Spaying your cat isnโ€™t just about preventing unwanted litters. It also:
โœ… Reduces the risk of certain cancers and uterine infections
โœ… Can improve behavior by decreasing roaming and yowling
โœ…Spayed females live longer with an average lifespan of 13.2 years vs 10.9 years for intact females

๐Ÿ›’ What toxins or treats are in your kitchen? ๐Ÿพ

We sorted common foods into โ€œSafe to Shareโ€ and โ€œToxic to Petsโ€ to help keep your companions safe at home.

โŒ Toxic foods should never be given to any pets.
โœ… โ€œSafe to Shareโ€ items can be fed as treats to dogs in moderation.

Note: Food safety varies by species. Snacks that are safe for dogs may be harmful for cats, rabbits, ferrets, and other household pets due to their unique dietary needs. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿน

๐Ÿ’ก PRO TIP: Always check your labels! Xylitol is sometimes labeled as "Birch Sugar" and is extremely toxic. It can be found in peanut butter, gum, candies, toothpaste, supplements, and other sugar-free items. ๐Ÿšซ

โš ๏ธ If your pet ingests something toxic, contact your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline right away.
If ever in doubt, give us a call. We're here to help.

๐ŸพWelcome Harley "Quinn" to RRVC ๐Ÿพ

This sweet Mini Schnauzer is starting her next chapter of adventures in a new home. She loves scouting the neighborhood from her window, especially when there's suspicious squirrel activity nearby๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘€

Fun fact: Miniature Schnauzers were originally bred as farm watchdogs and for vermin control, so Quinn's โ€œneighborhood watchโ€ duties come naturally!

The Snow Is Melting โ„๏ธ and Revealing More Than Just Mud ๐ŸŒฑ

โ€‹This patient came in after repeated vomiting, a painful belly, and not eating food... she also has a history of exploring and a knack for finding "hidden treasures" in the melting snow. An ultrasound, x-rays with barium contrast study, and a pancreatitis test were used to determine the best treatment plan for this sweet dog. She fully recovered and was back to helping on the farm in no time. ๐Ÿถ

โ€‹This time of year we see an increase in pets with vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and changes in appetite. The melting snow can reveal monthsโ€™ worth of debris, spoiled food, bones, trash, moldy or decaying organic material, and even toxins.

โ€‹๐Ÿพ Some cases are from mild upset stomachs while others are more serious. The signs can be similar for multiple conditions such as:
โ€ข Dietary Indiscretion: Ingesting spoiled food, trash, or "thawed" organic material.
โ€ข Physical Blockages: Foreign objects or intestinal obstructions.
โ€ข Systemic Disease: Underlying issues like organ failure or endocrine disorders.
โ€ข Pancreatitis: Severe, painful inflammation often triggered by fatty "finds."
โ€ข Parasites & Infections: Puddle pathogens like Giardia or Leptospirosis.

โ€‹๐Ÿ” Diagnostics help take the guesswork out of patient care and may include:
โ€ข F***l Testing: To identify microscopic parasites and harmful bacteria.
โ€ข Bloodwork: To check hydration, organ function, and signs of systemic infection.
โ€ข Pancreatitis SNAP Test: A rapid test to see if the pancreas is inflamed.
โ€ข Ultrasound: A real-time look at the health of the internal organs.
โ€ข X-rays: To check for obvious foreign objects or gas patterns.
โ€ข Barium Study: A series of X-rays to track movement through the gut and find hidden blockages.

โ€‹If your pet isnโ€™t acting like themselves, not eating, or has ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, please donโ€™t hesitate to reach out. Weโ€™re here to help keep your pets safe and healthy through every season.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month!

๐ŸฆทRecently we treated:
๐Ÿถ A young dog with a fractured tooth and retained baby teeth
๐Ÿฑ A young cat with painful gingivostomatitis
๐Ÿ• A senior dog with severe dental disease requiring extractions
๐Ÿ• A senior dog for his yearly routine dental cleaning and x-rays
๐Ÿถ A dog with persistent bad breath that was not dental disease at all, but an oral tumor!

Pets should have a dental exam by a veterinarian if there are signs of persistent bad breath, drooling, or changes in eating or chewing habits.
Dental disease often develops out of sight. Pets are remarkably good at hiding discomfort, and appetite alone is not a reliable indicator of oral health.
Routine dental evaluations help us identify problems early and keep pets healthy.

๐Ÿ“ž Call us to schedule a dental exam. Ask about 10% off dental cleaning offered year-round when scheduled within 30 days of a physical exam.
