Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), often referred to as "winter depression" or seasonal depression, is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern.

• When it typically occurs: For most people, symptoms start in the late fall or early winter and tend to go away during the sunnier days of spring and summer. Less commonly, some experience it during the spring and summer months.
• What it is: It is more than just the "winter blues." SAD is a recurrent major depressive disorder with a seasonal pattern, meaning the symptoms are severe enough to interfere with daily life and functioning.

• Common Symptoms (Winter-Pattern SAD):
• Persistent low mood and sadness.
• Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed.
• Low energy, feeling sluggish, or excessive tiredness.
• Oversleeping (sleeping too much).
• Carbohydrate cravings, overeating, and weight gain.
• Difficulty concentrating.

• The Cause (Theory): The exact cause isn't fully understood, but it's often linked to the reduced exposure to natural sunlight during the shorter days of fall and winter. This lack of sunlight is thought to disrupt the body's internal clock (circadian rhythm) and affect key brain chemicals like serotonin (which regulates mood) and melatonin (which regulates sleep).
If you suspect you or a loved one might be struggling with SAD, it is important to talk to a healthcare professional, as treatments like light therapy, talk therapy, and sometimes medication can help.
