Double lung transplant in va**ng injury!
"What I saw in his lungs is something I never saw before, and I have been doing lung transplants for 20 years." Doctors successfully performed the first double lung transplant on a 17-year-old with a va**ng injury.
The severity of the teen's condition quickly put him high on the national waiting list.
The teen was admitted to a hospital on Sept. 5 and needed intubation by Sept. 12. On Sept. 17, he was hooked up to a heart-lung machine treatment called ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) to keep him alive. He continued to decline and was transferred to Henry Ford on Oct. 3, then put on the waiting list on Oct. 8. Doctors did the 6-hour transplant Oct. 15 after the patient's situation became more and more critical. They mentioned that the lung injury came entirely from va**ng. While the boy is doing as well as can be expected, he has a long, intense recovery ahead.
Va**ng-associated pulmonary/lung injury is a lung disease associated with the use of va**ng products that can be severe and life-threatening. Symptoms can initially mimic common pulmonary diagnoses like pneumonia, but individuals typically do not respond to antibiotic therapy. Individuals usually present for care within a few days to weeks of symptom onset.
The use of e-cigarettes has increased rapidly. Although va**ng has been shown to assist with smoking cessation, cases of severe va**ng-related pulmonary disease and a number of deaths have recently been reported. E-cigarettes, vapes, e-pipes and other va**ng products are battery-powered devices that allow users to inhale aerosolized liquid. They typically contain ni****ne, which is highly addictive and harmful to the adolescent brain. E-cigarette aerosol contains harmful substances, such as ultrafine particles, oil, and heavy metals like nickel, tin and lead Other harmful substances known to have adverse health effects include ultra-fine particles, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds. E-cigarettes are commonly used to inhale ni****ne but can also be used to deliver substances such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and butane hash oils (also known as dab
