Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. According to the CDC, 1 in 10 adults in the nation have diabetes.

Risk factors for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes are:

> You are overweight.
> You are 45 years of age or older.
> Your parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes.
> You are physically active fewer than 3 times per week.
> You ever gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds.
> You ever had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes).

Diabetes can impact your body in more ways than one. Diabetes can attack your eyesight. Just because you think you can see perfectly does not mean you are not going blind from diabetes. Without your annual eye exam, there is no way to tell if your eyes are damaged from diabetes.

The adult prevalence of diabetes in Kentucky has increased 6.4 percent over the past 12 years. Did you know there are 138,000 Kentuckians who don't know they are living with diabetes, according to the state fact sheet? Diabetes can easily go unseen without regular check ups with your family provider. Some of the most common risk factors for developing type two diabetes are being overweight, over the age of 45, a parent or sibling with type two diabetes and being physically active less than three times a week.

Take care of yourself this November and schedule an appointment at one of our Big Sandy Health Care clinics about your risk for type two diabetes.
